The Government has announced that from 8th November 2016, anyone caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving a car would be fined £200 and receive six points on the licence.

Including tapping the screen to initiate the sat nav app whilst the phone is not in its holder. That's a fine.

But if I have a Tom Tom on the seat next to it and do exactly the same thing well that's not a fine that is fine.

Or if I initiate the sat nav on the built in touch screen well thats no fine that's just fine.

All imo equally distracting.

Anyone see the difference between these cos I'm struggling. This is a badly written law.

As it happens I don't believe in tapping anything whilst moving but that's not the point.

The law's an ass.

And its absolutely fine to have a burning log in your hand and smoke in your eyes whilst negotiating the trickiest of fast moving junctions.

In other news sons detached garage broken into, expensive motorcycle stolen, police couldn't be bothered to attend the scene but they did manage to issue a crime number, now where's the face palm smiley.

Why do upmarket brands including Tesla insist on puttimg ipad sized touch pads for " infotainment" bang in the centre of the car, nowhere near the drivers line of sight. Surely operating that is just as dangerous as using a mobile phone?

And why can a policeman use a personal radio while driving?

Personally I think the solution is simple, ban everyone from driving, except me...

BTW Can you be fined for using a phone whilst riding a pushbike?

The six points is a ridiculous precedent, if the offence was enforced properly, there would be no need for this fixed fine/penalty rubbish. Dangerous driving should be dealt with appropriately, and someone answering their phone while stood in traffic is not dangerous driving.

They're highly trained, just like the traffic officer who was testing his unmarked Vectra 3.2 at over 150mph on the public roads a few years back.

Sorry bit ot but stuck in traffic this morning. Saw a lovely maroon 65 plate Tesla and a outlander phev parked outside a well let's say very modest home (but in a decent area) and again can I stress modest unappealing looking home.

And it struck me why do people spend disproportionately large amounts of cash on a depreciating asset and not buy a better house? You spend more time in the house. It's like living in a run down old mobile home but you own a merc....just why?

I don't see the logic myself. Still each to their own. Maybe the house is fantastic inside...

As the UK campaign to stamp out mobile phone use whilst driving a vehicle has been a complete success the UK government plans to go a step further and make it an offence to talk to any passenger in the vehicle or to operate any electronic device such as a radio or a CD player in a vehicle on UK roads.

Breaking News- just released from the Department of Transport.

Are they going to use cameras to pick up these offences because I rarely see cops about to do anything about anything, except maybe with a speed camera in the hand occasionally? usually they just drive about chatting to each other lol

Indeed, Our house looks very modest outside, although just built a new trellis fence at the front (for visibility) to stop footballs landing in swmbos flower garden, had roof done, guttering etc, but inside 42sq m of oak flooring now in place rewired, replastered a bit new bathroom, new place to do the cooking (you know where i mean) nice new solid wood interior doors, new bathroom new staircase carpets. and the depreciating asset (bought as a demo a lot cheaper) and a modest kia at that, draws no attention to our humble abode.

And the mobile is paired to handsfree.

The house is just somewhere to use as a base - the car is something to use for enjoyment (once you've retired) - and you have to give/leave the house to someone when you die, my car will reach end-of-life when I do !

Could be a company car, perhaps they don't need a bigger/better house. A friend had a two bedroom terraced house. A new jaguar XF outside was his leased car.

It does seem to be drifting off topic..

But it is about fines for using a mobile, and in the early days i was as prone as others, in fact using a mobile while driving in 1990...

Handsfree technology helps, but i agree with the points about 8" touchscreens out of the drivers sightline, very poor.

NorthWales Police recently put out a statement that they would welcome footage from motrists` mobile camera footage if it shows bad or illegal driving. Is this not taking spying on ones neighbour a bit too far? My suggestion to reduce mobile phone use would be an automatic 3 month driving ban.

Perhaps a few plain clothes police officers strategically placed at traffic lights would be an make people think a bit more about using a phone. (Often people with expensive cars are the ones too lazy/arrogant to get a hands free kit.) Prime time to catch drivers using their phone.

But unfortunately my local force have no interest whatsoever in my CCTV footage of some yob systematically trying every door on both my wife's and my cars at 3:30 a.m. before cutting the cable to my security lights. Good quality colour footage of the person, (but only eyes visible on face). I bet they'd be round in a flash if a local copper had been assaulted within 5 miles on the same night?

I thought "Driving without due care and attention" is still an offense?

I cannot remember the last time I saw a Police road patrol. Either they have all been laid off or retired?

We are on our own. The Police wont show up until there is a serious accident or fatality. Prevention is no longer a priority.

Using a phonewhilst driving is a no no but a couple of cars I have had on loan recently had enormous touch screens that take attention off driving, to my mind in some instances are as bad as phone use.
