Castrol Magnatec Stop-Start oil - Grease_monkey

Seen this oil advertised today. Will this oil really make much difference to engine longevity. Apparently it will form a self healing layer that will cling to metal surfaces. What do people think?

So it sticks like the proverbial s*** to a blanket, but how does it flow it's sticking to everything?

I'd suggest you keep to the manufacturer's recommendation and if this oil matches it, then use it.

Sounds like marketing hype for consumers (that don't know any better). Any good quality oil should be able to maintain a film on a surface anyway.

Exactly. Looking at the marketing blurb, it appears to be a full synthetic oil, modified for extra film strength.

As such, it's different from the older Magnatec stuff that's on sale in Tesco and Halfords, which is a cheaper mineral oil with an additive pack.

I guess this oil may be differently formulated to better suit todays stop-start eco friendly engines which will stop running under certain conditions in order to reduce pollution, and then restart again as soon as power is needed. Every time an engine stops oil will stop circulating and start draining down into the sump, and the restart will need a few turns of the oilpump to get the oil all round the engine again. If this oil clings on to the surfaces while the engine is stopped it may offer better protection for those first few revs after a restart. These engines are fairly new, but becoming common practice as manufacturers seek to reduce fuel consumption. First owners of these new cars may not care about whats happenning to their engines but a few years and owners down the line we may start to see excessive wear on engines that did lots of starts without the necessary oil to protect them.

Maybe stop-start engines will get electric oil pumps to eliminate the problem, there's always something newer coming inorder to overcome the problems caused by the last new thing.

How can you properly drain all the oil from a car when it contains oil that is supposed to cling to all engine surfaces or am I being stupid again ?

This! LOL

It just clings better than a standard oil...it doesn' mean that it won't drain out.

Castrol Magnatec Stop-Start oil - dllr64

You won't completley drain every molecule of oil out when you drain it since these oils are still designed to cling but I doubt you would be leaving more than 1% of the total capacity after draining. The philosophy seems akin to "boundary Lubrication" where a thin layer one molecule thick sticks on the components. A simimlar principle occurs in synovial joints in Humans.

I stand to be corrected but although Castrol markets Magnatec as synthetic it's actually manufacted from fractionating mineral oil rather than manufacturing the olefins de novo in the lab.

Castrol Magnatec Professional’s intelligent molecules cling like a magnet, dramatically reducing* engine wear. Micro filtered and with its signature green colour its your guarantee of Professional quality. Up to 75% of engine wear happens while your engine warms up. When the engines tops, oils drain off critical engine parts, however Castrol Magnatec Professional’s intelligent molecules don’t. They cling to the engine like a magnet providing an extra layer of protection; ready to protect from the moment you turn the key.

Castrol Magnatec Professional has been specially engineered to deliver outstanding wear protection in today’s modern engines. Modern diesels are fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters to remove harmful particles from the exhaust. Castrol Magnatec Professional OE 5W-40 is specially formulated to protect them by preventing deposit build up. Castrol Magnatec Professional. Instant protection from the moment you turn the key.

It's polar, innit! Esters, that is. A splash of this synthetic oil aids friction reduction - cam wear etc, in the region most likely to suffer drain down.

Meant I didn't have to top up every fifty miles or so. Also when I drained it out, went into the other car that consumed oil at an even more alarming rate. A revelation at the time (circa 1971).

I think I've seen a figure of 20% for oil retained in an engine after draining, though it'll vary with the design.

I've seen it suggested that straight weight mineral oils resisted corrosion better in light aircraft engines (which are parked most of the time) because of less drain-down. I dunno if this is true.

Re "I stand to be corrected"...I think you can sit down.

Castrol started marketing extensively hydrocracked Group III oils as synthetic,

In 1999, Mobil (with a vested interest as the main producer of actual synthetic oils) filed a complaint with some US advertising standards outfit, which found in Castrol's favor.

So, since that precedent, in most markets synthetic doesn't necessarily mean actually synthesised from simple molecules, and usually doesn't,

I THINK this is true in The Yook.

In Germany I understand the term is legally restricted to actual synthetic oils, though I dunno if compliance is enforced.

It may be good stuff, probably is, but hardly any of that blurb means anything so this may just be a case of niche-marketing getting ready to break into the big time as the niche expands.

Re various comments above, boundary lubrication is a BAD thing. As I understand it, its the situation where hydrodynamic lubrication breaks down, and contact occurs, allowing wear.

Boundary lubrication is on the increase because its more likely to occur with fashionably skinny fuel-saving oils. Its traditionally addressed with anti-wear agents like ZDDP, (now being phased out because it poisons catalysts long term) and its successors, which form a sacrificial chemically bonded "tribolayer" on surfaces , and friction modifiers, which are polar molecules that stick to surfaces. Sounds like this stuff might have a bigger dose of FM's, but the self-healing layer jive would apply to any oil

I wonder how big an issue stop-start itself is anyway. A lot of the enhanced wear on startup is because the additive package hasn't been heat-activated. This wont be the case on stop-start, and drain-down over a minute or two isn't going to be anything like complete.

It seems possible that this stuff could be advantageous on cold start on any car, but if you were really concerned about that you'd fit a prelube system. This would cost buttons as an OEM fitment, but is never, AFAIK, done.

So bicycles are not as green as they are made out to be if they use oil for their chains?

Who knew?

Forklift chain spray is very good for cycle & motorcycle chains due to its non fling formulation, a few of my friends exchange a pint of beer in return for a can of chain spray.
