Avant, is it possible for the tech people to add a thanks and/or like button at the end of posts ( this is done on landlordzone forum ) ? Nearly all people on the forum are polite and this would make it easier to acknowledge posts.

Scot - thanks for this. Would you like to E-mail kalpesh@honestjohn.co.uk and make the suggestion? Probably better coming from you as a forum member than from me.

A prompt and courteous reply from Kalpesh who said he would pass the idea on. Then nothing. Disappointing.

What were you expecting?

The idea has been passed on and then it's up to whoever decides these things if it should be implemented.

OP - I think many people these days expect instant responses (and decisions) in this era of electronics and computers. Maybe Kalpesh was just sitting on his backside 'doing nothing' in the hope that such a request came along and made his day? People do have other work to do, in this case keeping the site up and running with articles, stopping spammers, dealing with IT problems, etc.

Whether the (likely non-profit-making) forum gets like buttons etc is prbably not at the top of their priority list, especially as it needs to be discussed (when they and their colleagues [inlcuding HJ maybe] have some free time - not easy to come by in the world of work these days) amongst a good few members of staff first, before perhaps getting the thoughts of forum members as well.

Give them a bit of time, then send a gentle reminder after a month politley asking about any progress. 'Demanding satisfaction' after a week ain't gonna get you anywhere.

Personally it's not something I feel very strongly about. If I want to show my agreement with a particular post, it doesn't take long to reply saying so.

I'm certainly not uptight about it. The importance of a forum in life is relatively small.

It was simply a suggestion to have contributions easily acknowledged. I am certainly not a person expecting an immediate response : built my life on the philiosophy of the tortoise. I still think it was a reasonable timescale to expect the courtesy of an acknowledgement from whoever was to 'consider' it.

Ideas which have been put forward previously are surely not dismissed for eternity.

scot, agree with you, a good idea.

Thanks - I'm sure many people would find it helpful and it could reduce the lack of feedback for people who have have taken the time to post.

Is it long enough now to have expected some response ?

Incidentally : Whatever happened to idea of having motoring products reviewed by forum members ? A waste of people's time responding ?

I got asked my address for that but not heard anything further on it.

Maybe its old fashioned, I prefer the word traditional, but I believe good manners count. I have posted a number of times how highly I rate the website but this lack of courtesy from some of the backroom staff is disappointing.

It is surely not too much to expect that when you have been responding to something you are told what the end result is.

My role (as a volunteer) is to keep an eye on what's posted on the forum. I'm not responsible for admin or policy.

If (unlike me) anyone feels strongly about this and wants to contact HJ himself, the address is

letters@honestjohn.co.uk

But quicker, surely, just to post as little as a single word 'agree' or 'thanks'.

Avant - I sincerely apologise if you thought I was having a go at you. I appreciate voluntary work - I do some myself as a school governor. I have previously posted thanks.

The issue was not about like buttons : it was about good manners andI stand by that.
