Friends had clutch done on car a few months back.. £900ish, then after that driving down the road, clutch failed a few days later, repaired free under warranty then gear linkage failed (bolt not tightened?)

later on scraped a gate so needs 2 n/s doors and rear quarter panel about £1300 (not done yet)

last week lost all power lane 3 m6 southbound, with wife and 3 boys on board. incredibly got safely to hard shoulder and kids out quickly on passenger side and safely behind barrier.

then 3 separate low loaders home because of distance.

keep and repair or?

Depends on why it's lost power. If it's the (in-)famous oil pump failure, then it's down to scrap value anyway.

Rob from past experiences you are very probably right.

Given the body damage, scrapping seems sensible! If its replacement will be secondhand, you could perhaps steer them towards something Japanese and petrol-poowered.

Depends on fault and cost to repair and outlook for further costs, whats the mileage and service history like?

Lots of doors and panels for very little on ebay. (Multicolour schemes are all the rage now ;) )

Most body shops can do wonders with even bad scrapes and £1300 sounds very high, shop around.

Why not claim body damage on insurance?

How much was the car worth before?

And was it a loved car....to keep?

Bangernomics says keep and run into ground. Anothrr second hand car might be just as expensive when you get to sort the problems it may have.

Had a run of three bad luck, should be alright for a while now......

Sounds like an excuse to get others to justify a shopping trip.

Not giving any advice in this case, it won't be welcomed or listened to.

For intelligent comments. (it's summer, hot, got a nice cold beer and picnic lunch in the conservatory.)

mes excuses a brum, naturallement...

I know what i personally would suggest, but further to the comments about car condition and service history, their 2 cars are both in need of servicng and maintenance and his van needed serious work on it when it was sold, all 3 could happily be scrapped but, hey, not my problem. and 2 out of 3 of them not mot'd..either...one not insured either or taxed and still on the public road, but live and let live.... as we say
