Hi all
This morning my Insignia would not turn over the engine the battery was that flat. The RAC got me going again and ran a check which showed the battery and charging circuit was good and and also the at rest drain was ok too. The car was at a garage all day to have an engine hesitation issue investigated and a new maf was fitted which failed btw. On picking the car up the battery was flat again. They got me going again for my 20 mile drive home and all was ok. I just tried it now before bedtime and its flat yet again!!. Do I need a new battery despite what the RAC test said?
You could try disconnecting the battery when you park and see if it still goes flat, if it does the battery is u/s if it doesn't something is drawing quite a lot of current when its parked.
If you have access to a multimeter, connect it in series with the battery supply i.e remove a battery terminal and connect one meter lead to it and connect the other one to the battery, you will need the meter on the 'amps' range, make sure everything is turned off and wait for a few minutes for all the electronics to shut down before you connect the meter.
If it reads much more than about 100ma you have a fault, the first place to start is the alternator, disconnect the lead and see if there is any current flowing - there shouldn't be.
