The quality of dumped cars in East Anglia is improving. Over the last couple of days, have seen a dark green L-reg Mondeo estate, a lovely old Mercedes 230CE coupe, a Renault Clio and a late eighties Jaguar XJ6, all obviously dumped and with bits missing. The banger trade must really be in a poor state, if cars like this are being abandoned at the roadside.

There's a guy near me advertising that if it can be driven or towed he'll take it for free.
I wonder what he's doing with them.

Giving them an MoT (at the local), 12 months tax and selling them to people with a less than sparkling insurance history, maybe?

Does he want a 93K Pug 405 TD?? :-) I really do resent paying £60-£70 for the privilege of being allowed to deliver it to a scrapyard.

I'll dig out his telephone number if you want.

Just lately round here there have been a '95N Punto, '95N Cavalier, and a '00X Reliant Robin! (at the side of a dual carriageway, tipped onto its side, all windows smashed!)

Maybe it blew over in the breeze??

Did it have "Trotters Independent Traders" on the side?

I guess these later cars have blown engines or something major wrong with them, rather than being just generally 'knackered'. Towed there and left behind like an unfortunate puppy.
By the way, my local council will remove scrap cars for £12 at the owner's expense. I don't know if Bedford do that, Dave, but it's worth a look.

Possibly expensive cat.conv., abs, or other such modern electronics which may make them uneconomical to repair compared to previous much older simpler design cars.

Nope, they can only offer a list of approved contractors for me to phone.
I think I just need to wheel it out to the side of the road, and then say I sold it to some guy in a pub 6 weeks ago when they come asking... Apparently that excuse is good enough to get you off the hook! The only thing that puts me off this idea is that the logbook is still in my friend's name, and I wouldn't want to police knocking on his door, after all he's done nothing wrong.

If it has twin exhausts, you've mistaken it for a wheelbarrow ;o)

I read recently that some recovery companies are refusing to take older cars that have broken down to their compounds.
Many owners do not pay up because their cars are worthless and its then left to the recovery company to sort out scrapping e.t.c. Must be a major hassle to reclaim all the expense.
I suppose the low finance rates and easy credit deals available also play a part in the increase in dumping.
|
I've sometimes thought that a good way of losing a car would be to leave it in a public but legal place with a For Sale sign in the window and a non-existent phone number. It would be months before anyone thought of doing anything.
And you could transfer the registration to someone from the phone book, or someone who had died, or any large inefficient organisation.
Not that I'd consider doing this myself of course.
|
Cor, you devious bunch!
Must pass this on to a friend with a 170k j plate poverty spec Astra that's been sat untaxed and un-Sorned (and not registered in their name) on their driveway.....

I traded in my old mitsubishi last october, and recently received an invoice for just under £300 from Norfolk county council for removing, storing and disposing of it. It seems its new owner didn\'t want to keep it very long!
|
Joe, sounds like bad news! Have you had to pay up, are they pursuing you through the courts or have you managed to get the bill transferred to the new 'owner'?
|
All sorted out, council very helpful and accepted my letter and copy trade in invoice.
|
Joe. Thanks for that ! Good news all round then!

Steve - I suppose this is all just a reflection on the mentality of the typical person who runs a worthless car. Despite saving large amounts of depreciation, it just seems too much pain to them to fork out something like the cost of a tank of petrol to draw a final line under the life of a car, in order to look after the environment.
|
My local scap yard two miles away charges £25 delivered to take a car but if you are willing to drive the extra ten miles another yard will take them for free. There are loads of cars in Trade It for sale with no tax or MOT and often in need of attention, at what seems to be quite a high price. I don't know if they are ever sold.
|
This is all very amusing unless you live in a place like I do, in the country but not far from the outer surburbs where you see car after car dumped by (let me choose my words carefully here) lazy scum. It's easy to trace them off the VIN. Three points plus disposal and admin costs is entirely fair. Or maybe cement a big sign in their front garden saying "If you can't be bothered walking a few yards to a bin, no problem, just dump your rubbish here, I don't mind a bit"
