My advice would be to Google "DSG gearbox problems" before proceeding with either of the above. They obviously do not all give problems but a hell of a lot of them do !

Don't buy either a nearly 10 year old car is worth £ 500 max. there will be no warranty and any warranty given will be subject to lots of exclusions. and i very much doubt if that transmission would be covered.

Read HJ's car by car guide first.

tell us your usage, (we see the budget) and if it is for town/urban/suburban or rural, how many people for.. and mileage.

My opinion?

It doesnt pay to run your car accross to Italy, especially if its old. Its much much cheaper and far less stress to hire a car over there for two weeks.

8 years old is a danger zone for cars as in my experience (vag) thats when the first wave of major repairs will hit. They most likely need brakes/discs, some suspension work, and possibly dmf/dpf/dsg all expensive

Thank you for your opinion.

Yes, agree about the 8 year old danger zone on VAGs. I've just had a bill of £750 to fix the bouncy bits on mine

Just remember the 'lifetime' of a modern (within past 15 or so years) automatic gearbox is around 60,000 miles.

Anything over this is truely borrowed time.

If you are wandering where I got this nugget of information from, its a few of my contacts at well known manufacturer

This is also why gearboxes are sealed for life, or claim to need no maintenance over their life. Yes, because their life is only 60,000 miles.

Good luck either way, possibly get a warranty to cover yourself? We use WarrantyWise when we need to put a warranty on a vehicle for our customers.

You may be right about the short "lifetime" of DSG type automatic gearboxes, which are not for me - but this does not apply to Torque Converter (TC) gearboxes, which I know have a much longer trouble free life. In my case 128K miles, and another I know of is working well at >80k miles. But they need to be properly maintained ie the ATF "oil" changed/half changed every 50k mls despite the fact that some are made out to be sealed for life. I was told this by a member of The Fed of Auto Transmission engineers when he last changed the "oil" for me. He knew what he was doing and his advice was accurate.

Just a theory.....I wonder if part of the problem of auto box clutch/band wear is the way people tend to drive with them compared with a manual box.

I suspect many drivers, unconsciously, treat a manual gear change sequence with some respect, i.e. back off the throttle, dip the clutch, changing revs to appriopriate range, while changing gear then let the clutch more or less fully engage before applying more throttle. We do this as we learnt a long time ago that prolonged clutch slip or dropping clutches with mismatched speeds were bad things to avoid.

In contrast, an autobox detatches us from that progress, we just put our foot down constantly and let the box absorb all those changes in the clutches and geartrain. Remember that an abrupt change in engine revs requires considerable rotational kinetic energy to be absorbed/dissipated somewhere in a very short time i.e. massive torque peaks in the drive train.

You have illustrated my point, manufacturers claim the boxes to be sealed for life. Yes the life is 60k. Regular changes will extend this considerably as your contact rightly recommends
