Just a theory.....I wonder if part of the problem of auto box clutch/band wear is the way people tend to drive with them compared with a manual box.
I suspect many drivers, unconsciously, treat a manual gear change sequence with some respect, i.e. back off the throttle, dip the clutch, changing revs to appriopriate range, while changing gear then let the clutch more or less fully engage before applying more throttle. We do this as we learnt a long time ago that prolonged clutch slip or dropping clutches with mismatched speeds were bad things to avoid.
In contrast, an autobox detatches us from that progress, we just put our foot down constantly and let the box absorb all those changes in the clutches and geartrain. Remember that an abrupt change in engine revs requires considerable rotational kinetic energy to be absorbed/dissipated somewhere in a very short time i.e. massive torque peaks in the drive train.
