- Drive a real auto

Dear John,

I've just read PI's comments about credit hire. My car was shunted in the rear before Christmas and the other driver admitted liability. My insurers put me onto an accident management company who offered me a credit-hire car. I refused as:

1) it might well be seen as betterment so I'd have to pay;

2) I object on moral grounds to this costly way of keeping me mobile and hiking everyone's premiums;

3) I might feel upset if and when my 12 year-old car came back and I had to drive that again!

So I rang the other driver's insurers and they arranged a hire car at their own expense. Everyone happy.

If we all turn down credit-hire cars, then this sort of scheme will stop and we can all go back to being sensible again.
