Hello,

I don't know much about mechanics but it happens my car's got a glow plug broken and it is seized in. Apparently it need an motor engineer to drill it out and replace it. Does anybody know how can that cost, a range of price?

My main question is that until now I never really had any problem starting the engine. The glow plug light on the dashboard is very short and the car starts normally. I guess the other glow plugs are doing the job. So is it really worth the trouble to spend money on that now? What can happen if I just let it sit there for a while?

Thanks a lot for any advice

If you haven't broken it off, you can get them out with plenty of Rost off and using less force than the failure torque.

If you leave it as is, you might notice a misfire on that cylinder when starting from cold in winter but, it will only misfire at idle speed and soon stops once the engine warms up.

This can often happen with glow plugs on modern engines. The plugs are stainless steel, and the cylinder head is aluminium alloy. The thread is M10x1. The threads often pick up and become seized when you attempt to remove them. Of course it's very easy to be wise afterwards, but the way to avoid this is to coat them in a high temperature anti-seize compound. Be sure to do this when you fit new ones.

Your engine is direct injection and is not dependent on glow plugs for cold starting, unlike those on indirect injection engines. The worst you may get is a slight misfire when starting on a very cold morning.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

There are plenty of cars driving around where one of more of the glowplugs have burned-out.

My IDI Ford would start quite happily on 2 of the 4-just run unevenly for about 5 seconds.
