I am interested in a new Superb 1.4 DSG Petrol, SE trim. I have only been able to test drive a Diesel 2.0 DSG in SE L Executive trim.

It seems that no local (100 mile radius) midlands dealers (and very few national) have anything other than Diesel SEL's for test drive. Problem is also that these SEL's have 18" wheels and adjustable suspension. I would prefer 17" on the SE for assumed comfort and extra quietness, but I cannot test drive one with a 1.4 DSG engine (or any other engine!). (It doesn't matter if hatch or estate).

Has anyone driven one of these or could comment on my problem?

You wonder sometimes how dealers manage to sell any cars at all, at least two dealers in the midlands have one listed on their used car stock list and both have 'demonstrator' mileage!

Try getting a test drive in one of these - it will also give you a bit of an idea how the car will wear over time. There are a couple of used Superbs with that engine in your area:

These may be 'group stock', so worthwhile phoning the dealer in advance and saying you want to test drive that particular used car (not telling them you'll eventually buy new). If, once you've driven the car and decide to buy a new one, if the dealer starts to try to sell you the used one instead too hard, you can always walk away and buy via a broker.

Hi, Thanks, BUT, the links you have given are all SE L spec models with 18" wheels, thus neatly illustrating my problem :-)

I used the web site to do a further search and..

There is ONE only SE 1.4 DSG, but it is 'coming soon' and in West Sussex, I may be desperate enough to drive all the way there :-(

For sure 17" would a better option and a test drive important. The 1.4tsi engine being lighter and default engine being sold a 2.0tdi then handling would be important to test.

I'm not defending dealers, but inevitably they can't have every single permutation available for test drive, so they will have the best-selling models as demonstrators.

Sometimes you can find a used one in the spec that you want: the other way to do it is to try, say, a Superb SE with a different engine (to find out about comfort and equipment) and then try a different car with the 1.4 engine and DSG: an Octavia perhaps. That's a lot better than nothing.

I think nearly ALL the dealer got the same demo car model/version. I ordered a diesel SE Business estate at the end of August as my company car (it's gone back now as I've left the company) and noticed that all the dealers within range of me seemed to have the same cars for the launch (Sept).

Loved my car and the 5 months I had it were pure bliss apart from the shocking windscreen washers (seems a common fault).

Look on the Briskoda forums for more information/advice. Very helpful bunch of people and I recall a few have the 1.4 petrol versions.

Hi, not sure how you got on with your quest. I sympathise as I have found it really tricky to get various models with a petrol for a test drive (Kia Sportgae, Hyundai Tucson, Renault Kadjar - no test = no sale).

I did , however, manage to get my hands on a Skoda Superb Hatch with the 1.4 TSI ACT engine. Manual gearbox, not DSG.

For what it was worth, I though that the engine did a great job in the car, particularly considering the size. Pulled well and seemed relaxed across the motorway and dual carriage way sections that we got to try.

The car was in Ridgway Skoda, Reading. Not sure if that is of any use.

I should have mentioned, the test was in an SEL spec, I didn't check the wheel size but I didn't notice that the ride was poor.

In 2008 our local Toyota dealer kept coming up with excuses why I could not drive an Auris. So I spoke to Toyota Customer services who put another dealer in touch with me. Their excuse why I could not drive one, they had sold all the demonstrators and it would be at least 4 weeks before they got any more.

Bought a BMW.

Back in 2010 the wife fancied a Passatt estate. We decided that the 1.4 TSi engine was the most suitable for us and tried to get a test drive. One idiot dealer offered to loan us a Scirocco 1.4 TSi, same car apparantly, but not quite as big and 2 less doors etc etc, as I said what an idiot. Another dealer kept promising to get one in for us form another branch but ultimately admitted the car did not exist.

Went and bought a Kia.

In 2013 I fancied (amonst other cars) a Volvo V40 with the 1.6 Petrol turbo engine. Local idiot dealer said they did not sell petrols since no one bought them.

Went and bought a Seat.

Vote with your feet, if they cannot provide a car to drive how do they expect to sell one.

When I was changing cars earlier this year my initial short list was:

Mercedes E Class

BMW 5 Series

Audi A6

All in SE spec for ride comfort. The Mercedes dealership said all our demonstrators are AMG sports spec. The BMW dealership said all our deminstrators are M sport spec. The Audi dealership said all our demonstators are S line spec. I can only assume that it's the UK senior management of these Companies wanting to push their customer base into products that they believe will give the brand a younger image and grow sales over a wider age demographic... It didn't work - I bought something else!

The "user-choosers" do tend to go for the sports-oriented models, hence the predominance of AMG-line (not AMG!), M Sport (not M!) and S-Line (not S!) as they all want the look-alikes without the costs of the true performance versions - helped by the fact these look-alikes have good residuals so lower leasing rates.

I too prefer the ordinary versions with comfortable suspension and burr walnut but had to test-drive a R-Line VW and then read the brochure before ordering a SE.

They also hope people will buy the ones they've test-driven - i.e. the top-of-the-range versions - as the profit margins are greater on these.
