I recently took my 2004 focus to a diesel specialist as it was loosing power slightly at 2000 revs intermittently. They tested the injectors which they said were fine, but they could never get the car started afterwards. After a few weeks they got a motor electrician out who told them its either the ECU or the injector pump. either way they said I will have to pay for it. I am a little peeved as the car was running fine before I took it in, and the repair cost is more than the value of the car. They say that the work they have done has not created the problem.

Do I have a leg to stand on as a friend of mine said you may have to pay to have the car checked by a third party to see if it is a problem they have created, but can be hard to prove either way. As anyone any advice?

You would have to show (engineer's report) that the garage's actions were negligent or fell below a 'reasonable standard of workmanship'. You would have to pay for that report too - though IF it went to a court case and IF you won, there MIGHT be a CHANCE of getting those costs claimed back from the garage.

By the way, you start by saying that the car was losing power (which is why you took it in), but then claim that it was running fine before you took it in.

Not exactly consistent.

It was found to have a kinked vacum hose, which they said could make the car stutter, and they also tested the injectors.

Apart from the odd stutter when you put your foot down, the car ran fine, and it was that stutter I took it in for

I don't think you need an engineer's report to prove that you drove it to the garage to fix whatever problem it had, they attempted to fix it, and now it won't start so now it can't be driven.
