A UK national resident in France decides to buy a used car in the UK from a bonafide dealer.

At the point of sale the vehicle tax is surrendered by the dealer who claims any refund due.

Strictly speaking, the buyer needs to tax the vehicle to drive it legally to the ferry to get it out of the country.

(In the real world you drive to the ferry the same day - the car still shows as taxed for a couple of days)

I and many other expats don't have a UK address.

AFAIK you can't tax a vehicle as a non-resident using a non-UK address.

Is there any way of getting around this legally? Or is it one of those situations that falls down into the cracks in the DVLA's system?

In Germany the ADAC sell a minimal form of insurance, i.e. 3rd party only, for the purpose of importing vehicles from abroad. With this I was able to tax my new vehicle (or at least the dealer could). Maybe the ACF offer the same.

This isn't an insurance problem - in France you get a copy of the UK V5 emailed to you-take it to your insurance agent/broker-they then insure the car for a month to give you time to get it to France and get it french registered.

Except you need insurance to tax it.

Except you need insurance to tax it.

Touche! The French insurance is legally valid in any country of the EU.

And the UK reg number is on the temporary certificate.

Doesn't need an MOT because less than a year old.

What you do is get a copy of the uk V5 emailed to you.

You then go to your insurance broker who will insure the uk registered car temporarily for four weeks to give you time to get the car over and register it in france.

But you'd need to get the evidence into the UK system - unless the French insurer has online access to the UK's MID database, you'd need to get the certificate to show at a UK post office.

But will a UK post office accept a french insurance certificate?

(All French insurance certificates are the standard "green slip" format)

I somehow doubt it.

Surely as a French resident would you not tax the car in France. That would cover you to drive from the dealer to your home.

If only formalities in the EU were that simple. To register my car bought in the UK, the car needed to be inspected to confirm the VIN, an original watermarked certification of conformity presented (you try getting one of those!) as well as the insurance cover note.

There is no road tax in France. There is a one-off registration tax depending on their theoretical "fiscal horsepower" and the CO2 output.

Only if you buy a seriously polluting vehicle like a Ferrari or a big yank there is a yearly pollution tax.

You can't register a UK car here without the original UK V5-no copies accepted.

You tax a vehicle when you register it with DVLA. Overseas car importation can seem daunting even to an experienced collector- what’s with the procedures, paperwork, and other hidden costs. However, as with almost everything else, a clear understanding of the process makes a huge difference. As a US expat in the UK, I wanted to import a new ford mustang for more than 12 months of use and thus I had to part with 10% import duty and 20% VAT. I also had to pay US taxes, FBAR, for my foreign account combined balance exceeded $30K by the FBAR deadline of April 15th. I spent $1000 to ship in a consolidated container from Port of Los Angeles to Felixstowe. After inspection, I registered with DVLA of which it took 7 weeks to receive the registration certificate.

Didn't think it worked that way any more. The tax refund goes to the previous keeper - unless it's ex demo/dealer fleet.

Also had a recollection that isurance is no longer checked when re-taxing. With the contiuous insurance requirement enforcement moved to constant check of MIB against whole DVLA database plus ANPR.

It was a pre-reg dealer stock car - re the insurance when re-taxing, I don't know but it was insured by my french broker which is valid in every country in the EC and the UK.

What I am trying to find out is what is the official line from the DVLA on how taxing a vehicle to get it to the ferry is achieved if you don't have an address in the UK.
