BMW X1 2016 SDrive - Help with BMW x1 Sdrive Diesel - Ravs

Hi,

I was waiting like a hawk from the time the new BMW X1 got announced. It looked soo much better than the old one. Now that it is out, I have test driven the entry sDrive18d Automatic diesel and it was just brilliant.

Problem is that I do not want to go for the higher powered (high emissions) petrol versions. Shame that they do not do a ECO Petrol version. So my only option is to go for the entry level diesel. Main thing is, I live very close by to work, so it takes me about 10 mins to get there. I also come home for lunch. So every day, there are 4 short trips, each about 10 mins. Weekends, we tend to do a little more driving, so minimum, we will drive for about 30-40 mins. I was reading about how diesel engines work and about DPF. This is a little worrying. Would you think my current life-style would end up messing the expensive filter?

I really like the X1 a lot and after doing loads of research on other models, my only other alternative is Audi A3 Saloon Auto (1.4 Petrol). The emissions are low, the mileage is good plus it is a petrol. But ya, it is a saloon and not the same as X1. So I really am in a fix, any suggestion/advice will be very helpful.

Oh, by the way I checked both the GLA and Q3. GLA's got amazing interiors but it feels soo cramped inside. Q3 is a little better, but high maintenance cost and standard equipment/space is not as good as X1!!

Thanks in advance :)

Diesels just take a bit of time to warmup and therefore MPG is going to be bad. and run the risk of the DPF clogging up.

I see you have set you heart on the X1 and the A3 is not an alternative it's something else. The Q3 or one of the other VAG groups clones is the most direct alternative which do have the 1.4 petrol engines.

I susect it's unlikely in the short term BMW will release smaller pertrol/turbo engines like the B38 in the X1. Currently seams they are not being deply in any thing other than the mini and i8

Audi verses BMW service cost are likely to be exactly the same i.e. pricy. S

So basically the X1 is not really your best option and I have much the same issue while BMW are primarly aiming to deliver diesel engines.

4 short runs (inc 2 cold starts) every day will create havoc with the DPF. The weekend runs may save it but its an expensive gamble, are you feeling lucky.

I'd not risk the DPF even with a weekly longer drive. I'd pay the extra £2k and a few quid extra VED for the 2 litre petrol and 4 wheel drive. Better drive and much better traction and grip in the wet. The diesel won't give you the economy as it won't be warmed up and you don't really need the economy as you're not doing high miles. You'll get the extra money back when you sell a low mileage BMW petrol 4wd around December time.

I was thinking about an X1, but the higher powered models petrol and diesel.

BMW do a decent petrol, but not the high powered one that europe gets, but i tow a caravan, for the OP i would think the "low powered" petrol would be fine, its around 190 ps?

Reason i didn't buy was reports of poor residuals expected by the press, and it only got a 4 star rating unlike the X3 with 5. (X3 is too big for me).

So i bought another CX-5, it was also around £10K less than the X1 with the extras i needed to match a CX-5. Plus its always best to buy a model a couple of years into production.

That's very quick...thanks a lot for all your suggestions. Looks like going for the Deisel X1 is going to be an expensive gamble. But yes, I have my heart totally set on it, especially after test driving it!!

I did check other models like the Nissan Quashqai, Mazda CX3 which are cheaper and economical than the X1, but only if you for the entry level models without automatic gearbox. As soon as you add Auto transmission, the price and emissions go up!! On quite a lot of them, Auto is not even offered on entry engines, they only come on higher specifications!

Honda HR-V was another interesting option, but I read horrible reviews about the CVT Auto gearbox on it...I didn't even bother to test drive this (unless anyone here suggests me to do so)

I drive a Ford at the moment and really looking to step-up and go for one of the German cars. Considering my mileage, budget and options available, I dont think anything else matches the Audi A3 Saloon. The 1.4 Petrol has 150BHP with Auto transmission and because of its clever cylinder de-activation technology, it emits under 110gm CO2. I think I will visit my local Audi dealer and test drive this car once again. I know its no SUV, but probably better suits my requirement!

Thanks again :)

"I really like the X1 a lot and after doing loads of research on other models, my only other alternative is Audi A3 Saloon Auto (1.4 Petrol)."

Very different cars! You might find one of the other cars with the 1.4 TSI more suitable - for example the Audi A3 Sportback (5-door hatch), VW Golf hatch, estate or SV, the SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia (both hatch or estate).

BMW offer an 'eco' engine - the 3-cylinder 1.5 - in the 2-series Active Tourer which is an alternative to the X1. You can't have 4wd with that engine, but I presume that's not essential as you're considering the A3.

Xtrailman's suggestion of the Mazda CX-5 is a good one - there's also the smaller CX-3 which also has the 2.0 petrol engine. Xtrailman will correct me if I'm wrong, but the Mazdas I looked at didn't even have space for a spare tyre - so not for me.

Yes, I know, they are very different cars even to compare. My requirement is quite broad, I love the SUVs as they give that raised driving position but probably it is a little too much for my lifestyle! And I really want a nice Automatic transmission which is good on emissions too. That's how I landed on the A3 Saloon.

However, something I recently checked, the Q3 is also offered with the same 1.4 Petrol engine with 150HP. The emissions are not that low, it costs about 130£ to tax, but the petrol engine and it being similar to X1 might be more suitable for my requirement.

Anyone has any comments about the revised Q3?

Cheers :)

Seriously, unless the car tax is in the £500 a year sort of region, it doesn't matter. Compared to depreciation or finance costs, it's minimal

You'll not regret the X1 diesel , it's an excellent all rounder with a quality and ability not found in rivals, in my mind the Q3 doesn't stack up to the feel of space and solidity. I bought an X1 23d xdrive which is just excellent and very well equipped, I too have a short journey on a daily basis but just alternate onto a long way round to make sure I give it a blast along 5 miles of dual carriage a couple of times a week, I also ensure I fill up with BP Ultimate every two or three tanks, hopefully that combined with an annual service and good check over will ensure many years of comfortable motoring because, I I have no intentions of changing this car for some time.
