As soon as I switch the air con on my S98 Daewoo Lanos, there's
a fairly loud vibrating noise that only stops when i switch it off.
Any suggestions what it could be ? as far as i know (have had the can for 18 months) it has never been recharged, thanks

When the aircon is on, the radiator fans should cut in. Have you checked the fans? Are the blades intact/got a bit missing? That could be your vibration.

Could be a chunk out of the A/C drive belt.

Have you checked the air conditioning pump? It has a pulley wheel bolted to an electro magnetic clutch which allows the pulley to free-wheel when the AC is off (to save fuel and power)
With the engine OFF, check the security of the bolts or fixings holding the pulley to the unit. Also check the pump mountings as well, as any movement here will cause the belt to run out of true and which can cause vibration.

Are you sure it isn't something silly like the exhaust/cat/shield rattling when the engine revs drop a little under load?
As above, check the fan as that starts as soon as the air is on.
