A ticking noise started in engine and it was coming from the area of the alternator/power steering pump..it eventually started making an awful racket

so much so that you could here me before you could see me.

One of my neighbours told me to spray the belt with WD40 and see what happens...well i did and noise stopped..he said i had a 'dry belt' which would be better replaced...because the noise will come back..which it did ..so i sprayed again....so belt replacement on the menu.....point is i'd never heard of a 'dry belt'..is this what happens when the belt is on it's way out ??

A ticking belt can often be caused by a tiny stone(or other debris) getting stuck between the V's of the drive belt.

Dry belt is a term used for a belt where the rubber has hardened and usually starts to slip (squeal).

Could be.....it is not affecting performance...so a new belt seems to be the logical solution.....they only cost about £8

cheers mate

I have an ancient can of Grako Sprazon belt dressing by Graton & Knight.

I don't know what's in it but all my cam and fan belts got a squirt every year or two. None ever broke; one, a VW cambelt, was still going strong at over 240,000m when I sold the car.

Probably broke the following week.

OP. belts are cheap and have a finite life. Rubber hardens and cracks, apples to tyres as well as belts. Consider them to be a consumable item and replace at the correct interval

Its a leather belt dressing and clearly not intended for use on cam belts.

Also worthy of note is that a well known manufacturer of all sorts of auto drive belts in Scotland specifically excludes any oil or luricant contamination in its warranty t&c's.

Most oils and lubricants degrade the material integrity of cam and other drive belts. Belts known to be contaminated should be replaced at the earliest convenience.

These belts are supposed to run dry. When replacing a belt it is permissible to clean up pulleys with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry off.

I would be interested to know the difference, if any, between the composition of 'dry' cambelts and those that run in oil e.g.Ford ecoboost. Any mech/chem engineers out there to tell us, please?

Not probably. Possibly, but unlikely.

They are indeed, it's the labour and hassle that's costly. Are there still many people out there who seriously think that rubber is a major component of cambelts?

Clearly this is from a legal source. Lawyers are not noted for their scientific knowledge or even accuracy on occasion in my experience. Its (sic) not just a leather belt dressing, on the can it CLEARLY states 'leather, rubber, synthetic and fabric'.

Does it say on the container "can be used on automobile cam belts to extend their life way beyond the maufacturers recommended service interval"

Often you get a 'swishing' noise from V belts. This is caused by grease and road grime contaminating the belt which then causes it to stick the the pulleys. The result is an annoying but not serious noise.

Applying baby powder or dried chalk will stop the noise immediately, as it will dry the belt and prevent it from sticking, but nothing will prevent it from eventually returning. Spraying WD40 or any other kind of oil on the belt will create more problems than it will solve.

Whether they're the single V type or a multi V type these belts drive on the sides and not on the bottom. If the belt is so worn that the bottom of the belt is in contact with the pulley it needs to be replaced, and no amount of tensioning will make any difference.

That'll be old trouble-free cars and more money in the bank, then...:)
