The Back Room Poll - Martyn [(ex) BR moderator]
Over the months, several Back Room people have asked if we could have an occasional poll about some topic or other which is occupying their minds.

One or two, and in particular Wowbagger (hi, Steve), asked if we might do it as a regular thing.

So as from the beginning of next week (barring hiccups) we\'ll be running a poll (kindly supplied free of charge by www.alxnet.com ). Wowbagger\'s suggestions included \"How long is it since you last read the Highway Code?\", so that will be the subject of the first poll, but if anyone else has suggestions for subsequent polls, post them here in this thread and we\'ll use the best ones. And if a particular issue comes up, we\'ll consider changing the poll mid-week in order to run a \'special\'.

The Back Room Poll will appear at the top level of the forum.

Martyn,

I fixed your link for you. [sigh] A space before and after a link is required.

Yours ever helpfully,

Mark.

>>"How long is it since you last read the Highway Code?"?

Given the "Dumb Britain" standard of questions on the AA quiz (see other thread) it seems it is unnecessary ...

Do you have to go and find a thread for the poll, or will a popup appear when you logon?

As I said in my earlier message, the Poll will appear at the top level of the forum. In other words, at the same level as Discussion, Technical, Classifieds and Announcements.

It would be nice to have the results of the polls archived somehow, so the mood of the backroom over time could be viewed.

Moods?
What do you mean?
Aren't you thinking of some other species?

What's the Highway Code? Look, someone was going to ask...

I think the polls could be a great idea.

I'd imagine though that the results of polls are going to lead to a huge increase in constructive debate in the Discussion forum - just a thought bearing in mind the overload that the site was suffering from in traffic recently.

Are they anonymous polls or not? No real reason for asking that, just curious.

I suspect that\'s being a bit over-optimistic, HF.

Yes, they are. And the results just a collection of numbers expressed as a percentage of the \'turn-out\'.

I\'m going to turn it on now (Saturday, 1.30pm) in case I forget tomorrow, so you can see what I mean. You\'ll find it at the top level, alongside Discussion and Technical.

Do I take this as volunteering? I\'m afraid there is no mechanism for alxnet (the poll\'s host) to do anything as clever or as revealing as provide an archive of results, so it would have to be an informal and ad hoc enterprise, if you want to take it on.

On second thoughts, though, I expect the poll topics (by the way, where are those topics? No one has suggested one as yet) to be so varied that they won\'t relate to each other for comparison.

By the way, I\'m starting a new topic in discussion where you can post topics for future polls. Please don\'t post them in this thread, or they might be missed. Emailing them to me, too, will make sure I see them. I\'ll pick the best ones to use.

Sure, I'd have a go at keeping a record of results in a thread.
Would have to know how long a poll would run for and when it was due to be 'overwritten' daily, weekly etc....

"How long is it since you last read the Highway Code?"?

All right, all right - I'll read it!

By warning us of this impending poll you've given us all a chance to re-read the Highway Code before the poll opens and we can all answer honestly that we've read it within the past week ;o))

After watching Car Junkies on BBC2 the other evening, how about a poll on Bull bars - should they be banned, both on existing and new vehicles?

Is the current BR Poll stuck? It hasn't changed for weeks now has it?
