I know there have been previous posts about this, but here goes nothing...

I have got a job in Manchester, and my partner a job in Leeds. We are wondering where best to live to get reasonable commutes either way (we are moving up from London).

So far I have looked at the Marsden area (A62 into Manchester), west Huddersfield (A635) or Huddersfield generally (M62). Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Approximate rushhour commute times to Manchester? Are trains any better?

Grateful for your thoughts - hoping nothing can be worse than your average London commute.

M62 commute is for those who are used to M25, but then you need to add in a height of 1200 ft at Saddleworth and the interesting weather this can bring. A roads are even worse for being affected by snow. The ability to work from home would be a real advantage.

20 years ago I did Leeds to Manchester for a year and leaving Leeds at 6am saw me in Manchester for between 8 and 8.30. Returning at between 7 and 9pm took 45 minutes!

Train is more sensible, but Leeds Manchester via Huddersfield is woefully understocked and has a service which starts in the north east meaning very packed trains and passengers left standing at stations.

Caldervale Line between Leeds and Manchester Victoria is slower, but less busy and there are lots of options for places to live which have stations. Halifax, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge etc etc.

I occasionally (2-3 times a month) have to drive along the M62 to/from jobs for work. It can be horribly slow, especially in the rush-hour periods, which run from 7:30 am until gone 9. The section from J22 (Saddleworth) to J20 (Rochdale) can be really slow, and is also pretty snow-prone. Going towards Leeds from Huddersfield is also pretty solid (you're going past Bradford and all of the other dormitory towns going towards Leeds, along with traffic that's heading for the M1)

I'd suggest looking at the train possibilities. From Huddersfield to Leeds or Manchester always used to be pretty quick. I lived on the western outskirts of Huddersfield for a few years - Milnsbridge/Longwood area to be more precise - (did my degree there), and found it a lovely part of the world.

EDIT : I've seen daveyjp's post regarding trains. He appears to have a better idea on the situation than I do, but I'll leave my section up anyway. However, read his in preference to mine.

I'd second daveyjp's comments, M62 in either direction is congested at commuter times, not only that, the local paper in Huddersfield has reported an accident, with lane or (complete) closures almost every day for the last two years; the probability of consequent long delays is high.

A friend uses the train from Huddersfield to Leeds each day, always horribly overcrowded at rush hour, I don't know how the Halifax route compares.

(We used to have a guy commute to Huddersfield from the Manchester area, a little fellow, one day when he tried to get off he was swept back on by the rush and taken to Leeds!)

Your compensating factors in coming from the South are cheaper housing and nice scenery within easy reach.

As a southerner relocated to Leeds-Bradford area, I agree with that – the cost of renting a boxroom in a grim houseshare down south gets a whole flat up here.

It is a disappointment to find that road congestion is a problem up here too, though, having previously naively thought it was only a problem south of Brum...

Tell me about it. I am from the northwest myself, and am sick of having to rent a tiny, damp and rodent-infested 2 bed flat for the price of 2 x 4 bed houses up there! I am used to a 40-min cycle ride to get into work. Shame i can't do that on the m62 (sounds like i would get there quicker)!

In an average to poor winter you might be very glad of the train - tho I believe that can be a bit depressing. And the drive is not brilliant any time of year.

Right - a further question on the Huddersfield area to Manchester commute - how much of a difference does half term make? Been monitoring traffic delays this morning (0600-0900) and they don't seem to be as bad as I expected. Is this due to reduced traffic because of half-term, just a good day or both?

Half term always makes a big difference. Near me the A1 in to Newcastle takes about half as long as last week. is it due to parents taking the week off or just that poeple go to work later?

It will make a difference, however the first traffic report I heard today was at 6.45am.

Accident M62 junction 16 Prestbury - reduced lanes for Manchester bound traffic, heavy congestion.

I always find the heaviest traffic is November leading to Christmas and put it down to very few people being on holiday. Check the traffic levels after this week.

M60 Junction 17 (not 16) is Prestwich. Always very heavy going down into 'Death Valley' - the Irwell valley between 17 and 16.

At the moment 50mph limit through several miles of roadworks on the M62/M60. Great for fuel economy.

Half term traffic is much reduced but driving from Huddersfield/Halifax into Manchester will not be fun. Bear in mind you leave the M60 at Junction 19 for the best route into the city centre.
