BMW 5 Series 2002 530D - Power Steering Leak - Steveieb

Having located the leak on the power steering in the area of the power steering cooler, I am at loss to find the best way of accessing this area as it is crammed with air con pipes and the radiators.

Grateful for any advise as to whether i need an air con engineer to access this area and change the cooler or pipes.

If it's necessary to dismantle any part of the air conditioning system you will need a specialist with the right equipment to evacuate the refridgerant and re-gas it after your repairs have been done. This is not a DIY job. A/C systems need the correct amount of refridgerant otherwise it will not work properly.

Really puzzled because the leak is dripping from the offside front and dripping from the front valance on the drivers side.

But there doesn't seem to be any power steering pipe work on that side.

Has anyone any ideas where it could be coming from. I am lneeding to top up half a reservoir full once a month.

I would think your best option is to remove the front bumper which will give you access to most of the pipework.There is no need to disturb the a/c system at this stage.

No need for disturbing anything as major as a bumper off job. The radiator cowling and fan come off in about 10 minutes after you unhook the hoses as you lift the fan and cowl out as a pair. You then have a huge amount of room to work in.

Perhaps worthwhile finding a friendly, local, recommended garage to take over now.
