Ash is surely caused by using the wrong oil - DPF-equipped cars MUST use low-ash oil.
Using the wrong oil will shorten the life of a DPF but even the correct DPF friendly grades create ash, just less of it. Ash is formed when the soot particles are burnt off.
The OP's DPF has done over 100,000 miles, thats probably about the end of its natural lfe and could well be the reason the previous owner sold it on.
As I understand it these clever processes (not the soak in snake oil or blow through with a pressure washer) that can reclaim your DPF do work to some extent but they only burn off the soot when they have been used innaproriately with no opportunity for rgens, they do not remove the ash, there is no cure for that.
