Why does it need a new dpf.?How old is the car?

Vw golf - Volkswagen Golf - dpf opinions - hyb

Been various issues with it, long story but basically struggling with boost pressure. Has had new turbo actuator, new egr, no leaks but finally found that ash content on dpf is huge and that it is full (108g)?

Taking it back to where I got it from a month ago but looking at my options for this.

It's a 2008 Vw Golf 2.0 TDI sportline 105000.

Have you considered getting it cleaned?

Vw golf - Volkswagen Golf - dpf opinions - hyb

Yes I think that is what will be done I just dubious as to how long that is effective for.

Any experience of how effective it is. Some said about removing it and soaking it overnight in dpf cleaner then power washing it out.

I would try and get the dpf to have a forced regeneration programme. You will need to find somebody with professional diagnostic kit.The genuine VW machine is the best.It should be possible to find an indy techie with this outside of the maindealer network.

I've been told that the ash levels are so high that it won't allow it for danger of fire.

So basically full

You mention soaking the dpf overnight in 'dpf cleaner'. Unfortunately, most of these fluids could equally be marketed under the name 'snake oil'.

The only reliable method of cleaning out a dpf like this is the 'ceramex' process. However, if you've only had the car a month, I'd suggest taking it back to where you got it from, and informing that a 'dpf delete' would not be acceptable to you as a 'fix'.

The ash can't be burn off only carbon can be burn off, so no amount of regens will work.

Washing will most likely only extent the life.

Ash is surely caused by using the wrong oil - DPF-equipped cars MUST use low-ash oil.

Ash is surely caused by using the wrong oil - DPF-equipped cars MUST use low-ash oil.

Using the wrong oil will shorten the life of a DPF but even the correct DPF friendly grades create ash, just less of it. Ash is formed when the soot particles are burnt off.

The OP's DPF has done over 100,000 miles, thats probably about the end of its natural lfe and could well be the reason the previous owner sold it on.

As I understand it these clever processes (not the soak in snake oil or blow through with a pressure washer) that can reclaim your DPF do work to some extent but they only burn off the soot when they have been used innaproriately with no opportunity for rgens, they do not remove the ash, there is no cure for that.
