Toyota Yaris - Yaris 1.4 d4d for a 60 mile commute - Oxheart

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a car for a 60 mile commute (30 of them motorway miles). I like small cars preferably with warm/hot hatch looks, i need reliability and good mpg so i have identified a Yaris d4d SR as a possibility.... £5k to spend.

Do you think this is a good option? Should i consider a petrol version instead? I've never owned a diesel, but from what i've read DPF can be a problem, is that the case with the yaris?

Many thanks for your help

p.s. other cars i've considered

Fiesta Zetec 1.6 tdci year 02-08 - i've read its gearing isn't suited to motorway mpg

107/aygo/c1 - I've read the small engines aren't suitable for motorway mileage, other than the C1 1.4 diesel.

Presumably you mean 60 miles each way: I think your mileage does justify a diesel, and you'll have no DPF problems with this sort of mileage.

A Yaris 1.4 diesel sounds just right if you prefer a small car: we have at least one regular contributor on here who has had one for some time and been very happy with it.

Yes, we have owned ours since 2005 - still going strong with minimal repairs..Regular maintenance only.

What's the commute like? A road? Motorway? Stop/start traffic?

I commute about 50 miles each way across country. We have a Yaris which I use from time to time, but I mostly use an MX-5 - which is perfect for the roads I travel.

The Yaris has been perfect.

Half of the commute is motorway miles, the other half mostly Aroads, there's not a lot of stop/starting.

I do have short journeys at evenings and weekends. So in my case DPF wouldn't be a problem? as a diesel newbie this is one thing that concerns me.

Many thanks everyone

Look after it and you could do far worse than a Yaris for the job.

Even with 30 miles each way you won't have DPF problems. Any diesel can take a few short journeys: it's when that's all it does that the DPF can clog up.

Thanks thats the info and reassurance i was hoping for!

Cheers everyone for your input, i will continue looking for the right Yaris D4D. Saying goodbye to my Swift Sport is going to be hard though!

I do my 75mile commute in a Yaris....and it's pretty comfy and hasn't let me down.

Mind you thats a Yaris HSD and it has the optional sports seats that hug you....worth considering if it's in your price range.

My commute is two thirds A12 (fast) and one third B roads through villages etc.
