Oh, and I'd personally never buy a cheap car that's had a HG failure. No idea what they haven't fixed because it was going to involve too much work or too much money !
In general, you get what you pay for. So if you want to spend very little on a car/van, then you can't really expect a lot of reliability. Sub-£1000 or so, you've got to expect it to be on it's last legs. The next owner will be the scrapyard.
However, if I was in the market for that type of vehicle, then I'd probably go for something like a Kangoo. The 1.5dci is a pretty good unit, and the same basic unit has been around for a long time, and is still in use in new cars today (Nissan, Renault and even in Mercedes cars).
But it's pot luck. You might get a good one, but you might equally not.
