Today I went to do some shopping, I drove around 8 miles in the the car, which has been running with no problems, apart from the odd intermittent electrical light (I think sensor fault maybe), however after stopping for around 10 minutes and returning to the car, the car wouldn't open with central locking, the car had no power what so ever and wouldn't start. I called out green flag who tried to get some charge into the battery under the bonnet ( due to is not being able to access the boot through central looking and no key access we couldn't access the main battery in the boot until he got some charge in to unlock the car) after this he charged the battery in the boot which started the car. The bonnet was open and it was raining heavy outside. Beside that a strong smell came from the bonnet and smoke started to come from the alternator. As soon as the technician removed the jump leads the engine cut out. After this the car wouldn't hold more than 5-6 volts and I couldn't drive home. It shocks me how the car was fine until I parked up and tried to restart it, no warning signs no distinctive noises. I am a student and a solitary cannot afford major repairs of my car. Does anybody know why or what the solution is to this? Or does anybody have any knowledge of why the ABS/TSC lights have been flicking on and off intermittently since purchasing the car. When the TSC lights come on, the car seems to loose power it doesn't accelerate as though the throttle is being totally cut off. I'm not sure if this is due to a sensor or a loose connection maybe. Any Advice would be appreciated thanks

It sounds like the alternator is faulty.I once had this on an old car of mine.Drove round fine, parked up and when i came out,it was totally dead. What had happened was the alternator had packed up a few days before(also taking the dash lamp with it) and the car had been running on its battery.Eventually the battery had died and hence no power. My brother in law came down and jump started it and i managed to limp it home before the battery again died.I charged the battery over night and it started first time the next morning.I then drove it to my local garage and had a new alternator fitted.Everything was fine after that.

In your case the random lights flashing might be due to low voltage in the battery(or might be totally unconnected fault)

Alternator prices range from £40 up to £240 depending on make and model.

Hope this helps

Yes that sounds exactly right. The car must have been running on whatever was left of the battery, thank you for your advice. As I am Planning to keep the car for a few more years I am thinking about putting a new alternator in, so it has no problems/wear and hopefully lasts. The low voltage and possible connection with the intermittent lights, thanks for the good suggestion. This could be related. I suppose I will find out when I chnage the alternator. The man who recovered me said the car had a bad earth somewhere, what does bad earth mean?

The earth is the return path for the cars electrics. The car body metal is the earth return path so all negative wires attach onto the bodywork so the electric can flow back.If you have a bad earth then that connection point will fail to work and hence cause all sorts of problems. If the alternator's earth is bad then ALL the cars functions will not work properly.Your problem could be a bad connection at the alternator(or earth point) and hence give you the problems you describe. If it is a bad earth then its a cheap and easy fix and you won't need a new alternator.

Before you jump to conclusions the problem may be with the battery rather than the alternator. If the Green Flag man had his jump leads connected for a few minutes at least then the battery if in good condition would've accepted charge enough to show an increase in voltage. However, if the battery has a short circuited cell it would not. I'm this condition the alternator would not be able to charge because the voltage could not be regulated, and in any case the alternator has to have a voltage input before it can provide an increased output.

So check the battery first by charging it. If no improvement is made then it's all but certain the battery is dead. If it does improve check the battery voltage with the engine running. It should be steady at around 14.4 volts. A good steady charging voltage gives a good (but not certain) indication that a battery is healthy. An unsteady wandering voltage is a sure sign of a battery that's unserviceable.

I had a battery fail overnight about 6 years ago. Fine one day, no hint of a problem, next day the dash lit up like a council house at christmas with clicking relay sounds and nothing from the starter. Jump started it OK and voltmeter showed a steady 14.4 volts with the engine running. After a 10 mile run battery showed 12.6 volts so was mystified. But when I tried to start the car nothing again other than flashing lights and clicking relays.

Bit the bullet and got a new battery. Car started immediately and still running on that battery today.

Be carefull charging batteries on modern cars especially those fitted with stop/start (like the Mini). You need to ensure the charger is the right one.

Smoke from the alternator does not sound too promising. However ,could be a problem with the overrun/clutch drive pulley.

Sounds like short circuit diodes in the alternator. If you disconnect it and charge the battery the car should run OK until until it goes flat.
