VW Golf mark VI 1.6TDI - Lost engine power on motorway! - ah207

Driving along the motorway earlier today, cruise control was on - nice steady speed. Suddenly a single audio tone sounded - and the engine management lamp (yellow coil shaped symbol) started flashing. The cruise control disengaged. I drove for another 5 mins at a reduced speed and stopped into a servcie station. The engine had not overheated - all other systems were normal. I set off again and after another 10 mins of steady driving, the engine management glow lamp came on again - but this time, I lost all power! Had to limp into the hard shoulder using whatever speed was left - and call the breakdown services. The car would not re-start. Fuel tank still 2/3 full. Got a tow home. Tomorrow, when the garages open, I will have to take it in. But what could have caused all this ? The car is from October 2009, and has just 59K miles on the clock - mainly motorway driving. This is the first serious fault I have ever experienced with it.

Unfortunately, the 1.6 tdi engines do suffer with various issues. Most commonly egr valves and injectors.Get the system tested and report.

Unfortunately 6 years and "just 59,000" in a diesel isn't necessarily a good thing.

Quick update: The car was left outside a local garge yesterday by the tow truck. I managed to pop in and see the mechanic this morning when they opened. He started the car - it turned over just fine - but the engine management lamp did not appear. He will carry out an electronic diagnosis today. He mentioned that the loss of engine power on on the motorway yesterday was simply the engine entering the safe mode.

Will report back once diagnosis has been performed and any costs incurred.

Understand completely on the point about low mileage after almost 6 years. We live in the city centre - and use the underground for commuting to/from work. Sadly, this means the 1.6TDI engine only ever sees action at weekends - even if that is mostly motorway driving.
