So - clutch biting point is quite high, have to press the pedal no more than one inch to engage it. Sometimes hard enough to get car into first and second gear - feel like I'm forcing it and I can hear a slight thud from the drive shaft in the process. There's an intermittent judder (rather than a clean bite) when pulling off from a stop. No noise, vibrations or slippage, and the pedal feels normal. 63,000 miles, 10 years old, mainly city driving.

If it needs a new clutch unit, what's the labour time?

Does a new clutch mean a DMF too?

Could there be any other issue?

Thanks!

A petrol does not have a DMF

I think BMWs do! Unfortunately.

If it does have a DMF, then you'd be far wiser changing that at the same time.

Basically, the amount of work involved is most of the expense. The DMF and clutch need the same amount of work to do, so changing the clutch and leaving a (potentially) nearly worn-out DMF would be a false economy.

However, you need to get prices. You can get prices from garages such as Mr Clutch, independents, and even from BMW dealers. Sometimes, their prices can be surprisingly cheap. Sometimes, ridiculously expensive.

Looks like you could have a dmf;www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BX92-EUR-06-...7

Thank you for that. I had the clutch checked today at a clutch specialist and was told it's fine. 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears feel notchy - sometimes 1st takes a real shove to engage. It feels as if the gearbox is properly lubricated. Also, in these gears there are times I hear a clunk from the middle of the car - it's as if the transmission and drive line aren't connecting smoothly. Annoying and I presume not good for the car.

€850 in Dublin to supply and fit a LUK brand clutch and DMF. €500 for a clutch alone. DMF doesn't involve any extra labour - just an expensive part.
