If it was syncromesh it would just be difficult to get INTO gear.

Any other recent history - e.g. new clutch?

Sounds like gear linkages out of allignment - worth checking engine mounts

Hi
Is it a six speed box?
What engine do you have?
I have seen some golf gearboxes that suffer from 2nd gear selector fork failure, the fork is held together by a rivet that can fail. Unfortunately the gearbox needs to come out and be stripped if this has happened.
As mentioned there is a procedure to reset the gear linkage, this usually only helps when the problem effects both gears in the same plane eg 1st and 2nd. 3rd and 4th etc.
does it make any difference if the engine is off?

Chris.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? Same happening to mine after a new clutch was fitted. Thanks

You're unlikely to get a response to an 8 year old post especially as the OP never responded to any questions.
