As Rob says, you do have to inform your insurance company.
You say, "...no claim will need to be made under my policy..." That's what you hope, of course, and it may go through like that. If there's any retraction from the other party, you will need to claim on your policy and get the excess back as well.
It is possible your insurance company may try to raise your premiums as a result, even if you make no claim - it seems that this should not happen, but there are cases of customers having to fight hard to prevent it.
All of this potential hassle is totally unfair, but it's the way things are.
