All,
I know HJ's views on supermarket petrol. Do the same apply to Diesel fuel or is it just a case of buying the cheapest possible.
Is there any difference between brands?
In anticipation.

I could waffle on about sulphur content, lubricity, particulate emmissions, detergent.... Oh, I just did.
I try and fill up at Shell every time for all the above reasons. Might sometimes find myself forced to use BP. Never use supermarket fuel if I can help it.

I always use Millers dieselclean wherever I fill up.
I have worked for a fuel addatives company and even with branded fuels you only get a keep clean dose of additive (thats if the tanker driver remembers to tip it in)

In principle there shouldn't be much difference between them, but I've always found that with Shell diesel I got an inexplicable fuel economy improvement of 5-10% (which is rather a lot) and more performance. I can't explain it and may be down to me just making miscalculations, but it was consistent over a number of years (I've stopped bothering now). I always try to get Shell whenever I can because I *think* it is better (which may scientifically untrue).
What is important, is that you get your fuel from stations with a high turnover so you don't get 'old' diesel. Especially around the winter months when petrol is added to prevent diesel from 'flaking' (freezing up).

I thought I discovered incredible economy improvement when switching to Shell, but realised it was a glitch in my spreadsheet once it reached about 55 mpg...(petrol, Omega 3.0)
