What 7 seater will suit me? - ike2

I currently drive a 2010 Skoda Octavia 1.4 TSi DSG Elegance estate which ticked all the boxes when I bought it. My needs have now changed and I am trying to figure out what car would now suit me best.

There are usually only two of us plus a labrador in the car but sometimes I need to take out a total of 6 adults plus the dog and need a car that will accommodate us all. I do @10000 miles a year mostly on A roads, B roads and country lanes as I live nearly an hour from the nearest motorway.

I would like an automatic again but am not fussed about the badge.

I am looking to spend £12k - £13k so most likely the car will be @3 years old. I know that a Ford Galaxy powershift and Seat Alhambra DSG would fit the bill but as I don't need 6/7 seats that much I don't really want a car that large to drive all the time.

Any suggestions, especially ones based on your own experience, would be welcome.

If the Galaxy is too large, how about going ine size down with an S-Max?

I've been looking at the Peugeot 5008, Renault Grand Scenic and Vauxhall Zafira Tourer - all automatic diesel versions - as these are the local dealers that we have.

If you're buying something 3 years old, most models will be out of warranty or just about to come out of it. So don't let this influence you as you can get an independent garage to service it.

Look carefully at the third row of seats: in some MPVs these are small and really only any good for children.

Used....automatic....French......diesel - all four words suggest RISK. However there are some good ones around, but you have t find one that's been well looked after as well as having a full service history. A Toyota Verso would probably be reliable but I don't think the third-row seata are very big.

Tardis?

Difficult to see how you can get a full 6 seater plus room for dog and have a normal sized vehicle, doesn't compute to be honest.

Depending on how often you carry the 6 + hound would renting a proper MPV when needed be worth considering, especially as you seem to want a more compact vehicle for the majority of use.

Agree with Avant's quip about used auto french diesel, i'd run a mile.

How about a Mercedes R320 CDI? A quick scan of autotrader suggests your budget would buy a 2009 one. Less bus like (and, frankly, less horrible) than the Galaxy, but should satisfy the six adult seats requirement and leave room for luggage and/or dog. MB servicing isn't frighteningly expensive; you'd only need one a year at your mileage, which is similar to mine.

If that's really too big, you need to look for a Honda FRV and learn to drive with your elbows tucked in. The Verso's third row (I had one) is not for adults.

Ssanyong do the biggest 7 seater around, takes 7 and luggage comfortably.

Assuming you dont mind putting the dog in the hatchback, then a Honda FR-V will do 6 adults plus the labrador.

1.8 petrol with the 5-spd auto is the best. We have one - its a sensational people-carrier and faultlessly reliable. £12K will get you the very best 58 or 09 late model, although there arent many around, and people hold onto them, with good reason.

Whilst they may not be the best and in respect of the design perhaps a little dated. You will struggle to beat the value of the Zafira. Pre reg vehicles with as little as 20 miles on the clock are for sale from £9,500. Just look on Autotrader there are many pre-reg vehicles at bargain basement prices.

Many thanks for all of the suggestions.

I will have to go out car hunting with both my other half, as they will be sitting in the third row of seats as they are the youngest, plus the dog to check that there is enough room.

I've spent the past 10 days or so visiting local garages and checking out the cars I thought most suitable.

Most of them proved to be too small in the third row of seats to comfortably seat an adult for anything other than very short journeys. So I have therefore discounted the Toyota Verso, Renault Grand Scenic, Kia Carens and Vauxhall Zafira Tourer.

This leaves me with a choice between two cars: Ford S-Max 2.0TDCi Zetec Powershift and Peugeot 5008 2.0HDi FAP 163 Active automatic. (The 2.0HDi 5008 is a proper torque converter automatic not like the 1.6HDi which is an automated manual). I can get a two year old model in both for @£14k. The Peugeot is from a garage 80 miles away and the S-Max is through Hertz Rent2Buy which will deliver it to my local car rental centre which is only 50 miles away.

Any thoughts about which is the best of my two chosen cars and also feedback on Hertz car sales.

I had an S-Max TDCi auto for almost five years and 40,000+ miles. Apart from regular service and wear and tear items, it cost me £390 for a rear shock absorber and even then, that was only because the car had Xenon headlights. Otherwise it would have cost me less than £50.

I loved it and only changed because I have children who need to learn to drive and the large car was not so vital any more. I can't think of a car I have loved for so long and that includes some very special cars. I know other local families who have had their S-Maxes for a lot longer and had a lot more wear and still they soldier on.

I think the S-Max is larger than the 5008 and the Pwershift gearbox makes it far more economical than the usual torque converter in the one I had and the one in the Peugeot. Remember they have the same engine.

Ford powershift auto has a mixed reputation, I would much rather go for a torque converter

Now for an update. Everything went quiet due to a berevement until the start of June when I saw Drive the Deal were offering something that almost suited me. On the HJ website they were offering a Citroen Berlingo Multispace with the new 1.6HDi addblue engine and a family pack (so 7 seats) for £10495. No automatic but the chance of getting a brand new 7 seater within my budget seemed too good to miss so I ordered one and paid my £500 deposit.

A few days later I had a call from the dealer that had quoted the price to say that they now could not secure such a large discount from Citroen and the price would be a little bit more. It would now be £12680 - more than £2000 more. It was not worth it to me, as Berlingos depreciate so much, so I cancelled the order and eventually got my deposit back. Drive the Deal were very apologetic that I and they had been let down by the dealer but there was nothing more they could do.

This means that I am now back to square one. Still not sure what to get but will probably go for a 4/5 year old Grand Scenic or 5008 auto about the same value as my p/x and then spend a bit more money on something that I ACTUALLY want, such as a Volvo XC70, when I no longer need 7 seats.

Daughter was looking for a 7 seater last year. I advised her to go for a Zafira - don't know what the prices are like now, but the new price then must afect the used price now.

She ended up with a Verso, but they were at a premium.

In view of your last para, have you looked to see what sort of 7-seater Volvo you could get within budget?

I was tempted by the same deal!

I currently run a 5 seater version, and the drive the deal offer was outstanding.

Obviously it was to good to be true! Did drive the deal compensate you for your troubles?

What 7 seater will suit me? - ike2

Yes, I know, if it looks too good to be true............

I haven't actually lost out financially so do not feel that DTD need to compensate me for anything, especially as they have been let down by the supplying dealer. All they have lost is my goodwill, and that of everyone I have told about it!!

HJ recommended a Toyota Verso 1.8 Valvematic petrol but am struggling to fit an adult in the third row of seats, which is what I need them for, although only for a few days each year.

I would love a Volvo XC90 and can get one within my budget quite easily, not worried about age as they go on for years around here, but even though my other half is Norwegian and loves Scandinavian design, he has some issues ove the running costs of such a large car.

I have never been so indecisive about buying a car before :-)
