Hi,

My fiesta has a worrying problem. It all started months ago, when I used to be over 60MPH, the car stalls for 2-5 seconds and no matter how hard you press the gas, the car wouldnt go any faster.

The problem is getting worse as now it stalls at 30MPH. When it stalls, the yellow engine light comes on and at times the Battery light comes on. They all switch off again after few seconds, however the problem keep on arising after few seconds/minutes.

I took it to the garage when it started it doing it and they couldnt find any errors. They blamed the ECU, however they admitted that it might not be the cause, and therefore they adviced me to use it until it gets worse and hopefully they could find some kind of error on the system.

Ive got no problem in changing an ECU, however I would like it to be 100% clear that the problem will be fixed before I go through the expense.

The fiesta just had a big service last week and no problems were reported. It has around 69000 miles and apart from this problem, it runs very well.

I would appreciate any feedback you could give me.

Thank you

ps. Im a newbie on this forum and my knowledge on cars is close to none.

"they blamed the ecu".?Sounds like a very expensive guess. It has been serviced, but has the fuel filter been replaced?I think more in depth testing needs to be done here.

In all fairness to them they said Fuel filter or ECU. The problem persisted after they replaced the fuel filter. Hence why I said they said ecu was the problem.

I personally doubt this. Reason: Why would the battery and Engine light switch on if it was the ECU playing up?

My niece has one of these cars and, a couple of years ago, it was exhibiting the sort of symptoms you describe. The problem turned out to be faulty seals on the engine injectors which, as I've since read, is a very common problem with this engine. Cost several hundred pounds to have it fixed, including four (second-hand) injectors.

You really need to have this fault accurately diagnosed by someone who really knows what they're doing with this diesel engine or you could end up paying out thousands if you start changing things like ECUs and it doesn't solve the problem.

Are the injectors noisy? My 1.4Tdci has suffered with engine dying for a few seconds then coming back up when my injectors last needed re-seating, and the injectors were noisy. Mine have been re-seated twice in 180,000 miles. Take yours to a local diesel specialist. In fact, many general service garages will turn you away for this job as special hydraulic pullers and seat cutters are often required.

As for the engine management light, surely, even if the light has gone out again, the fault code would be stored. Even my cheap Sealey VS8700 code reader can read (and delete) stored fault codes, though the only codes that have ever come up are the two connected with the EGR valve performance.

The engine sounds normal to me.

They said that the ecu is not firing and codes... even when they plugged inthe reader while they were driving it (and the problem occured). I think thats when they blamed the ecu.

HI @Buzu

A long shot as this was a while ago but my daughter has a similar problem an 08 1.4 TDCI very low miles with exactly the symptoms you described. Her local garage gave up and said it was the ECU and she needs to take it to a specialist but I'm not convinced. Did you get to the bottom of your problem?

Unfortunately Buzu hasn't logged in since, so chances of them responding are slim - but you never know.
