Evening all,

I was wondering if I could call upon your collected experience to value a Scenic II 1.9DCi currently wasting away on my drive.

It's our former family car, and hasn't turned a wheel since last June when we replaced it with a V70. It's a 55 plate and has done c. 80,000 miles (had the dash replaced so uncertain of exact mileage).

See the car here: imgur.com/a/zSxM0

Bad bits?

-It's a 10 year old family car, complete with all the little dents, scratches, stains, scuffs you'd imagine from a well used family car.

-The rear nearside window doesn't go up/down. The mechanism chewed itself so it's permanently in the "up" position. Will supply the mechanism and new window clips with the car for anybody adventurous enough to fix it!

-Rear parcel shelf has a snapped pivot, a snapped "hanger" and is generally pretty minging.

-Air-con isn't cold, and hasn't been since it went from freezing to nothing overnight two years ago.

-Had the DPF innards removed 3 years ago (when still perfectly legal). Sailed through every MOT since, including one since DPF removal was banned but have to assume new owner will want to reverse this?

-Currently on a SORN. Whilst I'll permit *any* inspection, have to lumber it with a "sold as seen" status really. :-(

Good bits?

-Dash failed, and was replaced.

-Fairly presentable for an old bus (see photos). Looks pukka from 6+ feet away! ;-)

-Brand new Hankooks on rear. 7mm tread Michelins on the front.

-Bills for thousands of pounds worth of maintenance.

-We've owned the car since 2008, we're 2nd owner.

-Never let us down!

-Current battery is kaput so I'll fit a new one for sale. Jump started car today for first time since September, strated first time.

I'd be super grateful for any input on the valuation. I'm guessing the inability to test drive the car (due to SORN) will be a limiting factor. If it's worth less that £500 I'll give it away to a family member.

Bung the details in here for an idea: www.wisebuyers.co.uk/motoring/used-car-prices/

Pity it's not on the road, you'd get a lot more if you could demonstrate it.

Can't you insure it some way, get it MOT'd and taxed. You'd lose the cost of a months tax when you get rid of it, but it'd fetch more of a premium.

Thanks for the reply, bathtub tom!

According to that site, the value for our car, a 55 Plate Scenic 130 Dynamique FAP 6 Speed (in poor condition) in a private sale is £1850.

For that kind of money I'd be inclined to get it MOT'ed (only driven 200 miles since last year's) taxed and... insured.

It's the last of those I'd be more concerned about. Quotes from "temporary" cover companies have been exorbitant (£230 for 21 days!) so I might see if our existing insurers will cover it on a temporary basis.

Here's another question - as somebody who hasn't sold a car for many years what is the accepted best route for doing so nowadays? Autotrader? Ebay?

Thanks in advance.

By way of a follow-up...

I've decided to take your advice and get the car back on the road, to fetch a better price and also hopefully shift it quicker.

My current insurer - Privilege - have insured it for a month for £41 which I think is reasonable. I've booked it into a garage tomorrow morning to get MOT'ed and the battery replaced, after which it's tax and flog!

Would still like to hear people's advice regarding likely places to sell cheap runarounds though.

Gumtree, Ebay. Autotrader.

The most important thing is to be realistically priced. Personally, I'm a big fan of auctioning on ebay, starting at 99p and making it clear that there is no reserve. That way you should get a decent price.

You can check what cars have sold for (which may be a lot different to what they are advertised for) by checking 'completed listings' on ebay. That will tell you a lot about reality.

Thanks Rob.

I'll hit the completed listsings now and see what's achievable.

I'd also suggest Gumtree, or Loot if you're London or thereabouts. The ads are free and can include photos.

Don't be tempted to set the price a little high believing you'll accept an offer. Set it low and don't negotiate, the lower price will attract more potential buyers.

Don't let anyone else drive it unless they can prove they're insured.

Don't let go of the keys unless you're sitting in the front passenger seat.

Be wary of cash. I close the deal in a bank, PO or building society. The cash gets counted and checked by a professional and goes straight into my account and then the keys and V5 section get handed over. Although I know of one person who hands the cash to their spouse who drives off to store it in 'Jims' safe. They wait until they see the new owner drive away before returning.

Great advice everyone, it's much appreciated.

As I'm not in London I've decided to steer clear of Gumtree, and have opted to sell on eBay as I already have a good reputation there as a seller / buyer.

Taken your advice on listing as well, it's on for £1 with no reserve on a 10 day auction. I've packed every conceivable detail into the listing and hopefully the 10 day auction will give anybody interested sufficient time to come and test the car in person.

It's MOT'ed / taxed / insured so I can take prospective purchasers around to prove it's roadworthy. Safety points regarding dodgy buyers gratefully noted and will be adhered to!

In the first 2 hours of listing I've had the usual numpties offering to exchange it for a turnip if I end the auction now, but I'll have to wait a fortnight until his brother brings the turnip back from Cyprus etc. etc. I'll report back when it's sold! :-)
