SEAT Alhambra 2008 - drive problem - Geoffers

I have a 2008 SEAT Alhambra – it has done 46500 miles. I have a problem with the drive. In the last year (15,000 miles), I’ve had 3 sets of disks and pads because the disks have warped. In attempt to find the cause, the drive flanges were replaced 7000 miles ago. But the disks went again, and in another attempt to isolate the cause, last week, the drive shafts were replaced, along with disk set number 3. At the same time I replaced the front tyres and had them balanced and the tracking done. There is still a perceptible tremor felt through the seat and the steering wheel when accelerating - as before, this disappears completely when I take my foot off the accelerator. Today I’ve swapped front and back tyres (all have good tread) to try to isolate the cause – but the same perceptible tremor is still there. What can it be? And whatever it is, is it causing the disks to warp? From the gearbox outwards, just about everything has been renewed. I’d very much appreciate your help.

Many thanks

Geoff Farrell

Have you taken the discs and pads back to Seat under warranty?

This sounds interesting. I find it hard to believe modern discs warp with normal use. Our second-hand 2000 Focus had an unnecessary new set of discs and pads at 29,000m when I bought it and the discs are still serviceable (new pads at 83,000) at 106,000. This is an interesting link...

Could it be a slightly eccentric drive shaft bearing? Perhaps there is a batch of vibrating SEATs out there?

If the discs were warping, there would have been vibration when braking but not under acceleration. How much were they warped (how much runout when checked with a dial gauge)?

Driveshafts or hubs seem a more likely cause of your vibration problem.

The drive shaft inner joints can cause this but usually only at a very high mileage.

Hello - I have more information that might lead to a diagnosis. I had swapped back to front wheels in case there was something with the actual wheels. But same basic problem. I then had them re balanced in order to 100% ensure that the wheels were not the problem at all. Immediatley the tremor disappeared from 2nd and 3rd gears (at speeds you'd use those gears for). But then it came in aggressively at around 60 mph and disappeared at 80 mph (in 4, 5, 6th gears). Very much so under acceleration but all but disappeared with no acceleration/foot off. Some wobble under braking at 65-75. And it varies - not to do with road surface though. At one point I thought it had stopped doing all this. But then was there but slightly less so. All this was on a trip to the Netherlands over the last 4 days. As you know, the roads over there are very smooth so a perfect testing ground for anything to do with this problem. Any thoughts - I'm faced with disposing of this much loved car at a knockdown price!

Vibration that comes and goes at different speeds suggests some 'out of balance' item is triggering a resonant frequency of the suspension.

Years ago it was quite common for some cars to have steering wobble at say 50mph but it would smooth out at 60mph. Often cured by new shock absorbers, sometimes worn steering ball joints or trackrod ends/bushes.

Hard to suggest what to try next, check wheels for side-to-side runout, maybe (though that ought to show as uneven tyre wear)?
