I have come into a record and CD collection of classical musicwhich consists of approx 1000 records and 2000 cd's.

I am in the process of listing he records and would be interested to hear from anyone who can point me in the right direction to go about selling them.

I would rather sell as a lot rather than go to the trouble of listing them on a site such as E-Bay, although I'm led to believe that some of the records are worth a fair bit on their own.

If any are rare/valuable then you are better off selling them individually. generally other music is worth very little so a job lot on eBay may be the way to go with the rest.

A appreciate you want to dispose of these with as little trouble as possible. However, if you can make a list, there are people who would maybe buy a substantial number of them - I might be one of those, but I've got a lot of CDs and am now choosy about what I would be interested in. I certainly wouldn't buy 2000.

Maybe it's too much to expect to shift 2000 in one go.

Where did the "A" come from?

Thanks for the heads up chaps. Once I have the records listed up I'll try to e-mail some collectors to find out if any are a little rare ans worth more.

Thet came into my possession from my neighbour who's husband died 3 years ago. He built up the collection over a period of 50 years.

My father and various contacts of his (some now sadly dead) have/had collections of classical music and opera etc. My understanding is that the records are of little value if they are LPs recorded as such. (Some very old LPs may have been re-recorded 78s and therefore have some rarity value - this was a business my father was in about 55 years ago).

But many of the recordings on LPs and certainly on CD have been available in other digital formats and now possess little value in an of themselves, unless the performer/artist/piece was especially under recorded for their 'fame' at the time.

I have about 1000 CDs and several hundred LPs myself, but equally would not buy a collection of that size. Have you tried Yarborough House in Bishops Castle (they have a website) ? Jock may be interested, and he also trades in older LPs. The Japanese used to chase round the world seeking out those (preferably pre-digital) recordings.

I'd like to see your list when it's done .... :-)

I have listed approx 250 LP's and looking at whats left I reckon there is going to be about 400 LP's plus about 20-30 boxed collections. If you would like a copy of the list let me know where to send it and I will be glad to oblige. As far as the CD collection goes I have not looked at them yet.

I should be finished the list of LP's by end of next week.

Fine, GBP. I'll get in touch via the mods. I haven't bought an LP for many years, but both lists would be of interest.

I can thnk of a few bands where some records are worth a few pounds, but not a fortune. In one case they had unusual sleeves which fold out, in another case they were not reissued on CD. In the case of classical music I presume any good recordings have been reissued on CD.

Another issue of course is the condition of the disks, and I bet they are scratched. That is a lot of records, and a lot of work to research each one. Maybe classical record magazines carry ads from buyers, I would have thought the would do a job lot price e.g. 30p per record or somesuch. There are music forums, why not ask there?

That is a reasonable presumption, but perhaps surprisingly not wholly true. A huge amount of stuff has been issued on CD, some of it for the first time, but some of my LPs contain music still unissued on CD.

Problem for the OP may be that CDs are now on the way out, much as LPs were in the late 80s. Many people now download stuff if they aren't bothered about the info in the accompanying booklet. Second-hand prices are falling noticeably.
