Citroen Relay - Citroen Relay - Van Smoking Heavily! Please help - tottenn00

Hi I have a citroen relay 2.2 hDi that is producing a lot of gray smoke I did a fuel system clean And the smoke seem to go for a while until a few days ago it seem to come bac but not as bad as it was, But today traveling at 70 it just reved itself up dropped in to limp mode for about five seconds with a huge plume of gray smoke then died a few attempts at restarting it and it did I made it home about 5 miles but there is a lot of gray smoke Levington the exhaust.

At first I thought fuel injector 3 was the problem as when I pulled the power it continues to idle a bit rough but nothing too serious this is why I did the clean though it might be a bit of debris needing cleaning,

My first thought was no 3 injector had failed so to test I swapped it with number 2 ran at 2000 rpm for 10 minutes to clear the excess fuel then pulled power on injector 2 to confirm bad injector but it stalled and new injector 3 still ran

any ideas I'm stumped

thanks in advance for any help

After doing my homework I think it may be possible that I'm looking at more than one issue here is it possible that the smoke could be a bad turbo seal and that the gray smoke is oil burning and dose over fueling give a black smoke?

Burning oil usually gives blue smoke, grey/black smoke is normally excess fuel. Those engines don't usually give turbo trouble. Under what circumstances does it emit the smoke?

HI thanks for the response

Sorry I should of been more specific the smoke is blue gray

the smoke is constantly coming out and increases with acceleration I'm also losing oil with no sign of leaking (I have done maybe 500 mile since last oil change) And lost half oil

I have checked turbo shaft for movement less than 1mm there is a coating of oil on pipe from the intercooler to engine and on the intake pipe to the turbo

when removing oil cap while running there is smoke

just to make it clear there is no black smoke at all (unfortunately)

I say that because removing the turbo looks a awful job very inaccessible :(

Also I forgot to say pulling injector 1,3 or 4 doesn't stall the engine pulling no. 2 does or 2 of 1,3 or 4 at the same time does

That's odd, normally it will only be down on one cylinder not three! That does seem to suggest an injector problem but the loss of oil could be leaking turbo seals or you could have a fault in the crankcase breather system. There normally will be some oil in the air intake piping this is from the breather system.

I don't think the smoke and injector problems are related it could be though that the engine is burning oil due to loss of compression on one or more cylinders.

You really need a diesel specialist rather than a garage, they usually know what they are doing.

did anyone resolve this issue? my 2003 L1 H1 is doing the same, only no visable oil leaks, mines bringing on the MIL and saying its a EGR issue but its not, took it back to the place i bought it today and the thing wont do it,was running dog rough last night revving up on its own and belching out grey/black smoke ,its a 2.2 puma engine, same as used in the transit and defender

EGR problems shouldn't affect the oil consumption, the cause could be failure of the turbo oil seals, in fact it sounds as though its running on lubricating oil. The only other problem I can think of is failure of the crankcase breathing system causing oil vapour to be sucked into the air intake.

does the crankcase system on this engine have some sort of filter?turbo has been ruled out,but it has been noted that the oil level has increased, they suspect injector issues, leaking diesel into the sump
