Passat 2.0 tdi SEL - VW Passat injectors - RebeccaDean

I have a 57 reg passat 2.0 TDI, done 133,000 miles. I bought the vehicle second hand last year. A few days ago, I was driving, all of a sudden I got engine warning lights and messages, the car lost all power and steering, came to an abrupt stop, and wouldn't turn back on. It was towed to a local garage who replaced a damaged injector. I happened to be aware of a recall for all four injectors being replaced, so I contacted VW who said this vehicle was recalled in 2011 and all four injectors were replaced. Please could anyone help me out, as to why I have just had to replace one of the injectors, which was damaged. I am now worried about driving the vehicle, as the way it came to a sudden stop the other day was dangerous, next time I may not be on a quiet road... what should I do?

With hindsight this may have been a bit of an oversight from the manufacturer, but if one injector were to fail then the ECM shuts down the other three before damage occurs to it. The injectors are piezo quartz and operate at high voltage and high current. An internal short circuit could damage the ECM. Unfortunately this has proved to be quite disturbing to the owner when this happens because the engine just stops and will not restart. Most likely only one injector has failed. Disconnect each one in turn and try to start the engine each time. When it runs the one that's disconnected is the faulty one.

Yes, the garage I took it to disconnected one injector at a time, to find the faulty one and replaced it. I'm just a little concerned that VW said this car was recalled in 2011 and had all four injectors replaced, yet I have had to replace one of those 3 and a half years later. Shouldn't they last longer than that?
