My teenage son is soon to take his driving test, and will be buying his first car (something like a 10-year-old Fiesta / Clio / Corsa etc).

Anyone got any recommendations for which insurance firm to approach? My wife and I are both on Direct Line, but I can't imagine them offering a particularly good deal for a first-time driver ...

All pointers welcomed. Thanks!

I hope to be in a similar position to you once my son has pased his driving test later this year. The advice I have been give is that the main driver (the new driver) should always have another mature driver on the insurance - a parent for instance - as that can dramatically reduce the premium.

I have insured my son's car and my own car under an Admiral multicar policy. My son has his own seperate policy which he is the main driver but my wife and i are named drivers to reduce the cost.

I found that a Citroen C1,Aygo,Peugeot 107 (all the same car) was the cheapest type of car for my son.It only has a 998cc 3 cylinder engine.

I found that Corsa's were very expensive to insure as they are always looked at by young drivers.

Even after shopping around for many weeks the cheapest i could get for my 18 year old son having just passed his test was £2,500 third party, fire and theft.

The second year was £640 and this year its down to £430.Girls are still considerably cheaper than boys even after the gender ruling.

Let us know what you got and the cost?

Niece has just got her first car: Co-op insurance and has a black-box installed. Presume this brought down the premium a bit.

Firstly, you will find that the premium on say a 2005 Fiesta may be cheaper than a 2004 Fiesta, which in turn may be cheaper than a 2003 model. Worth running quotes on all possible cars/variants as it makes sense to put the money into a car rather than insurance premium.

The route we took, and it depends on what car you or your wife drive and your NCB, was for my wife to own and insure the car our son drove using her full NCB to bring the premium down. He was, of course, named as the main driver. She became the main driver of my CMax (made no difference to the premium) and I bought a C1 and took out a new policy in my name with no NCB. We didn't pay more than £800 for his first year. Downside is that he didn't earn any NCB of his own, but when he did come to buy his first policy, he was older and had some driving experience under his belt.

Took out insurance for my 17 year old son in March last year, car a Fiesta 1.25 in his name with my wife and I as named drivers. Direct Line were cheapest insurer at c£2400 with sensible xs and did not increase premium when he past his test after 2 months. Some providers were much cheaper while he was on provisional but much more expensive once test passed. We've just renewed with Endsleigh at c£1600 so a decent saving, but I don't think initial or renewal costs are helped with son living away from home at school. We didn't want to change from Direct Line but they couldn't get near the price.

I've been doing loads and loads of quotes on comparison sites etc recently on more cars than I can count. I'm 22 but this will be my first policy. Diamond and Elephant (subsiduaries of Admiral) have both been the cheapest by some considerably distance - usually £200 cheaper than the next nearest without even a black box.

A broker may well be a better approach than a comparison site. Try your local high street.

Good luck with that, we tried a high street broker, very limited panel and pretty clueless, easy to see why comparison sites have taken over.

Good point, drd63: I used to use a broker who was very good and far from clueless - but they just didn't have enough insurers that they dealt with, and it was easy to go online and do a better deal directly.
