Ford Focus TDCi - Ford Focus 2010 TDCi 1.6l Turbo Issues - Andy Swans

Hi

My car is a Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi, I've been having the issue when accelerating where the Engine goes in to limp mode (engine malfunction light)

my garage has checked everything and is scratching their heads!! but still can't find the problem!

All connectors are fine, changed Egr valve, checked turbo fine, cleaned waste gate, they've even been in touch with Ford Dealer and they say to check all that he's done.....

question is do i try a new turbo?

the car has done 63k miles so pretty good for a 5 year old diesel (or so i'm told)

any advise on the problem would be much appreciated.

Andrew

Really can't see this being a turbo fault.Replacing it would be around a £600 gamble. Also you say it has been checked out ok.If the Mil comes on,there must be some fault codes stored to give some kind of indication of where the problem area is.

Hi Thanks for the reply, so you think its best to take it to ford? For a check? My garage said a calibration there might help? Thanks again

Have to agree with elekie doc on this one.

If the mil lamp has come on then the cars computer (ECU) HAS detected a fault and switched the lamp on so there must be a fault code registered!

Ford will have genuine Diagnostics and I find sometimes only dealer or very expensive diagnostics can be relied on.

And though these guy's hourly rate can be a bit high it's not going to be anything like the cost of randomly replacing say a turbo.

I would suggest taking it to a diesel specialist - they usually know what they are doing.

No mention of the variable vane mechanism: quite often these can stick I believe they can be freed off: google it.

For info. I had the exact same issue on my Audi A3 2.0tdi and it was a faulty Turbo. Got this replaced and it never went into limp mode again.

Hi Andy

This is probably a long shot but I'm having the exact same problems with my ford focus and just wondered if you found a solution?
