I'm looking for a car to replace my old Mazda 3 petrol. The engine itself is flawless (it's on 105k) but the arches are starting to rust badly and for some reason it upsets me to see rust on my car since I take such good care of it.

I've narrowed my choice down to the following - based mainly on how much car I get for my money along with reliability, which is my number one concern. I do ~20k miles a year

08 plate Honda Civic 2.2 CDTI. The diesels seem similarly priced to the I-Vtec so it makes sense to go with the diesel

08 plate Volvo S40 2.0D. Same engine as the focus but a nicer place to be. Similar price to the civic.

07 plate VW Jetta 1.9PD. This makes the list simply because it's the cheapest way (besides a leon) I can get my hands on the VAG PD engine with it's legendary reputation. This is a few hundred cheaper than the other 2 cars

The Jetta is I think Mexican or Brazilian built so not as well built as Golfs. However they are spacious comfortable cars and known to be economical. The Volvo I think is more cramped but also a good engine. Civic...what is the ride like?

None of them are bad but at 20,000 miles pa you need a reliable car with easy and cheap access for parts. That suggets the VW.

Jetta is Mexican made. Volvo is only slightly more cramped than a Jetta, although the jetta has a bigger boot though. Both are adequate for my needs though when it comes to interior/boot space

The civic's ride is the worst of the 3 but still acceptable for me. It's the biggest from the inside but I assume being a Honda, it's going to be rather reliable....besides the dodgy clutch issues.

I can't comment on the Civic as have never been in one but the S40 would get my vote. I had one a few years ago and one of my biggest regrets is getting rid of it though I own another Volvo now and am a big fan of them generally.

The S40 is a great car and as long as it's been serviced regularly then you shouldn't have a problem.

Good luck.

If the Mazda is in good condition apart from the arches, is it worth getting a one man and his dog bodyshop to do the business and sort them out for you instead, there might be another few good years in the car yet.

My handy little bodyshop has moved away from most insurance and trade work and now concentrates on classics and refurb work exactly like this (not just for money either, he finds work like this more interesting with amenable and appreciative clients), he can't be alone.

Course if you want another car thats a different thing.

I've asked around but I was told it was a large job as its all 4 arches. My regular body shop told me that they can do a 'fix' that's quicker and cheaper but it will only last a year or so as once it starts rusting....it continues to.

The car is only worth around 1k on the market and in a couple of months will need new front and rear tyres as well. The body shop quoted £500 for the cheaper fix.

As much as I like the car, I don't see any point in putting 800 into it when it's not worth much more. It's mechanically sound and been serviced every 10k with an interim oil change in between (5k oil changes). Someone will take it off my hands and I can use the money towards a newer rust free car

S40 all the way. Maybe I'm biased as I had one for 4 years and I miss it. Handles and steers well, rides well, cramped in back but wasn't an issue for me. A nice place to be indeed and felt like a quality product.

Tried a Jetta - dull, dull dull.

Don't like the Civic's ride and I found the 2.2 CDTi very rumbly despite what the reviews said when it first came out. Nice and responsive though.

Im not sure how many passengers you intend to carry around on a regular basis or if you are a small/tall/skinny/fat person, but I didnt like being in the back of a V40 with another adult, it was to cramped with limited leg room.

S40 winning it here.......

I'm 6 foot tall and stocky if that's of any help.

90% of the time it will just be me.

5% of the time I will have a single passenger. The other 5% I will have 2 passengers.

I don't remember the last time I had 3 passengers to be honest

'Single232' and '72 Dudes' can I ask if you had any issues/problems during your ownership?

If either of you had the 2.0 diesel, what sort of mpg did you guys get? Seems to vary a lot from what I have read. I will be sitting on the motorway @ 70mph for the vast majority of my time.

I think this engine is the same one used in Fords, Peugeot and Citroën. If so the one in my SMax was excellent and totally reliable.

It is indeed the same engine. Can I ask what sort of mpg you got with the s-max?

One thing that could be worth checking up on re. the Volvo: I'm pretty sure that the DPFs on the 2.0D motors in Fords and Volvos never used the Eolys additive to help regenerations, but I'm not 100% certain on this.

I know the 1.6TDCis in some Focuses, C-Maxes etc DID use Eolys. The problem with early Eolys-based systems is that when the car gets to third owner territory, the Eolys top-up gets forgotten, or the owner decides not to replace the DPF at the specified service interval - leading to expensive problems later.

The Ford 2.0d engines needed DPF renewal around 80000 miles, originally costing £1000 but apparently the cost has been reduced. The early engines never had a DPF. The newer 2.0 Volvo 5 cylinder engines don't need DPF renewal.

Hi just sticking my 20 pence worth in. Your looking at buying a 7-8 year old car and doing 20K miles a year. so in 5 years thats 100K plus what's on the car already. I know it's not cool ( I agree the 1.2 is a bit lackluster) but it makes great financial sence to buy a brand new Dacia Sandero, at £6700 ( for petrol, diesel more but 60+ mpg) brand new on the road and with the option of a 5 years warranty or even 7 years, I don't see much oposition. My son had to buy one (ex-MX5), so he was not happy, but has now come to realise it a great practical and affordable car. Just take a look at the repair bills you may be lining up with a 7-8 year old car that has to do another 100K. A opposed to a brand new vehicle.

A soon as My 11 year old diesel fiesta packs in I'm straight down to Dacia for a diesel Sandero if it lasts as long as my fiesta, depreciation costs are less than £1000 a year. With such low running costs I can run my sons MX5 easily ( I bought it off him) . Some win some lose.

Good Luck.

I got 33mpg from an automatic Smax doing mostly suburban driving. Compared to previous cars this is a major achievement.

Mine was a 2007 2.0D without the particle filter.

I averaged 46.3 MPG over 23k miles, with a high of 52.8 and a low of 39.1, all calculated brim to brim (I have spreadsheets!). You should have no trouble achieving high 40s with your journeys. This engine which uses the Ford/PSA block with some unique Volvo parts did sometimes have trouble with egr valves and the throttle body gunging up. Look for some hesitancy on warm up when on a steady throttle around 2000 RPM.

SE trim was downgraded in 2008 and leather became optional.

I had no issues apart from the clutch ended up going which can happen on any car. I had an 08 plate SE and from memory it returned an average in the high 40's.

Seriously nice car.

If I couldnt find a decent 1.6D Mk2 Mazda3 TS2, i'd go for the Volvo or the VW - the civic has concrete for suspension compared to the Mazda and it doesnt handle any better for it. On anything other than smooth roads the Civic will feel like you're driving on cobbled streets (I drove a rental 1.8Civic when my dads 3 was in bodyshop for repair. The S40 and Mk1 Mazda3 have the same Ford C1 Focus chassis. The PD VW is a gem of a diesel but it does need its own type of oil which is expensive. Was looking at a 55 Volvo S40 today and it still looks stylish, modern and rust free.

Beware of Mazda diesels. There have been well-documented problems with some of the engines, but no firm information that I know of that any of them can be relied on not to have the problems.
