Any recommendations for large boot and 7 seats? - Calad

Hi, I'm on the search for a car with a big boot, 7 seats, low running costs, can fit in a supermarket car parking space, good reliability, and can be bought secondhand without taking out a second mortgage. Yes, I do want the moon on a stick!

We currently have a Golf Estate which is fine but the boot is not big enough for our needs sometimes. Essentially it's used as a run around for daily short trips mostly but every couple of months we load it up with two children, a ton of clothes and general child rearing paraphernalia plus a large ish dog and take off for a camping trip/visit to the relatives/trip to France etc. Currently I have to consider the logistics of putting the dog on the roof as the Golf is completely stuffed full (don't worry, I've almost never resorted to actually putting him on the roof ;-) ).. I'd also like something that has 7 seats that can be put up for visiting grandparents to avoid the annoying two car thing when we go out for the day. And so we can fit in school friends etc.

I've looked at estates, eg Skoda Superb, but they aren't massively bigger in boot capacity than the Golf and don't have 7 seats. I know nothing about people carriers and don't know where to start tbh.

Any suggestions gratefully received :-)

7 seater cars exist BUT 7 x seat cars that can take luggage + large dog do not - you are into Combi type Vans IMHO.

Then you want to park it in a supermarket sized paring space.... a Tardis is the only solution

Cars with 7 seats AND a big boot DON'T fit in supermarket parking spaces - you're asking the impossible.

Even just 7 seats AND a big boot leaves little choice, basically a minibus - Hyundai i800 are well regarded and much cheaper than the VW/M-B equivalent.

I know three people with multiple offspring (3-6 children) and they all have VW Caravelles.

Whilst they are van based, they are comfortable and not much longer than a Superb Estate at just shy of 5m.

Hyundai, Citroen/Peugeot and Ford (Transit Connect Tourneo) all do similar vehicles.

I might be wrong but I understand the OP has two children and would only need 7 seats when relatives/ friends visit, so the need for 7 seats AND boot at the same time isn't so pressing.

Don't know the budget but I would look at Vauxhall Zafira, Toyota Verso, Mazda 5 (six seats really), Ford S Max, VW Touran, Citroen Grand Picasso, Peugeot 5008 and throw in a Mitsubishi Grandis too.

Of those, the Picassso/ 5008, Zafira, Grandis and S Max seem to have the largest boots with 5 seats in place. I look at some smaller MPVs and wonder if you'd get our double buggy in the boot (easily fits flat in our 'normal' estate).

I have a grand c-max and we are a family of 5. We use the extra two seats now and then, what's handy is that all the rear seats are independant, you can have a 2 + 2 config leaving a little walkway through the middle row, or 3 + 1 which we use when we have an extra on the school run. It drives well and isn't outrageously large, no problems parking at the supermarket. But the boot with the extra seats up is very small, enough for some shopping but not enough for a holiday to France. I think the same is the case for most of mid-sized family 7 seaters. If you need extra seats now and then for a short run with some extra kiddies (or grandparents in the middle row and kiddies in the back), they are fine. If you need to regularly seat 7 and luggage, then not so good. If that had been my need I would have selected an s-max for sure.

If you can tell us your budget and annual mileage that would help.

My bother has had a 2007 Citroen C4 Picasso 7 seater for 5 years. It is 2.0 petrol and been very reliable. He bought it at 10,000 miles, it has now done 50,000 miles.

Budget is up to £10,000 for anything up to around 5 years old. Mileage......um......don't really know. 9,000 a year?? Maybe?

Yes, it wasn't clear in my original post, apologies. I only have two children so the majority of the time it'll be 5 seats + large boot that's the requirement. When using 7 seats the boot will not be needed except on rare occasions. Some great suggestions on your post, thanks. I'm thinking the S-Max looks good.

I misunderstood your requirement - any 7-seater is basically up to that job but the space available in the 3rd row does vary, as does ease of access to the 3rd-row

Just sold an S-Max after almost five years. One of the best cars I have ever owned and driven. Well worth trying to find a good example. Mine had done 55,000 miles and drove as well as it did on the day I bought it.

S-Max is regarded by many as the best to drive in it's sector. Takes a loot of beating for what it does too.

Ssanyong do 7 seats and a boot in one of there models.

Plus they give a strong warranty and share some Mercedes tech.

But you need to be blind to drive one - they are soooooooooo ugly....

I disagree, its been facelifted and has a more efficent engine set up

Plus, you spend more time behind the wheel as opposed to looking at it.

Very poor design internally. The second row has two 'captains' chairs so to seat five people you need to occupy all three rows. No good if you have lots of luggage as well.

I agree - the S-Max seems the way to go for you, and being a Ford there should be plenty to choose from whatever your budget.

The critical factor seems to be the French camping trip with children, kit and dog - this is where the extra length of the S-Max will be useful. Some of the MPVs like the Verso and Zafira are not much, if any, longer than your Golf estate so although they're taller there's not much more useful room.

I agree. I posted a lengthy list of contenders earlier in the thread. But forgot to add - if it was my decision, I'd go for an S-Max.
