Renault Megane sport 2009 old shape - incorrect price given on trade in - malct

Hi all

This is my first post, but i would like to tell you about my experience in buying a Renault Megane 1.5 dci dynamique tomtom 3dr energy from a Renault dealership and trading in my 6 year old Renault Megane 1.6 Petrol Dynamique Sport Hatchback 2009 old shape!!! (Note the old shape)

I bought the Renault Megane 1.6 Petrol Dynamique Sport Hatchback new on the 2nd March 2009 on the new reg 2009 and it was also when Renault brought out the new version on the Megane, So i believe, my car which is the old model was one of the last of the production line and one of the last to be registered.

Since my car is coming up to six year old, i decided to look at trading my car in and buying a Renault Megane 1.5 dci dynamique tomtom 3dr energy, So while looking at the cars for sale on HJ website, I thought i had found the perfect car with only 2500 on the clock and a asking price of £11295, only issue was, its 300 miles away.

After speaking to the salesman on the phone, He made me a offer of £2150 for my car which i told him that i would not accept that amount. Since my car was due for its MOT, he told me to get it tested and he would review the price, plus he wanted photos of the Car.

On Wednesday the car passed its MOT, so i sent the salesman a copy of the MOT plus Photos of my car, He emailed back with a offer of £3950 for my car, I thought this cant be right, So i emailed him asking him to recheck the price plus full details of my car and he said that the figures was correct, So i phoned him up, asked him to check again, He said i can assure you the price is right, So i paid the deposit and bought the car. You can imagine how happy i was, Till i got a phone call from the salesman saying that he mis quoted me and that he had quoted me on the new 2009 shape and that he had to back out of the deal and the price was back down to £2150 for my car!!!!

Anyways, I am now looking again for another car , but shocked on how little my car is worth at a dealer, plus when you see the old shapes on the forecourt with a asking price of £4500 Plus. (there is a 55 plate a mile away with a price of £2250 and it makes you think that your been done!!!

So, Just a couple of things, How can dealers justify a £1800 difference's between the old shape and the new shape and that they were both registered on the same day, I understand that its the new shape car, But its still 6 years old!!!

Regarding my car, Is it better to try and sell private for £3000 with all the added pressure of selling the car, Or just bite the bullet and trade it in for around the £2000 mark.

My last point, of all the garages that i have spoken to, no one with negotiate on a deal, The price on the car is the price they will sell that car at and the bottom book price, is the price you get on your car, matterless of service history and low mileage, (My cat has 45,000 Mile on the clock and service book up to date.

Sorry that my first post is a bit of a ramble, but any thought are welcome.

Generally its the cost to change that matters most, so ignore the figures to buy and the trade in offer, it's the figure you're actually transferring that's the one to get as low as possible.

I have no idea what a Megane is worth, but if you check out sold listings on ebay you will get a range of figures.

Then go on one of the buy any car websites and give an absolutely brutally honest appraisal of your car to get a ball park starting price for a cash sale to trade.

Model change often totally destroys a cars value too, a British thing?

Then see what you like that's about and do some number crunching, with sensible figures, hopefully you'll make more via private sale, but can you be bothered with the aggro and the idiots, not a problem for me i just leave SWMBO to sort 'em out which she does with gusto, could always hire her out i suppose..:-)

As for 300 miles away, well if you were buying an ultra rare or specialist car then maybe no other choice, but i wouldn't want to be buying a normal car from so far, if it goes wrong you have a major headache getting things sorted.

Only my opinions...oh and welcome to the room.

Thank you for your reply, We buy any car is quoting me £2250.

Regarding the dealer, i have been checking out the Renault retail group on the Net and they have the best priced cars, but london from Cumbria is a bit far and like you say, its when things go wrong.

The prices in Cumbria are quite expensive because their is little competion, so got to look further afield

Same problem we had in south west wales. Last car 285 miles away. One before 150. One before that 250. If u want to save a lot you sometimes need to travel but think of warranty and costs of travelling. And the speed cameras on the way. Cost me for the awareness course!

If you're in Cumbria, you're within range of Manchester and Glasgow as well as Carlisle, so there should be plenty of Renault dealers that you cna try.

It's worth doing the sums against a brand new one: there should be good deals on a car that isn't among the top sellers, and you should get a better PX allowance against a brand new car than a used one, even a demonstrator or a pre-reg.

It might also beuiwrth looking at what the cost to change would be on other similar cars - perhaps the Ford Focus, Kia Ceed. Hyundai i30 and Skoda Rapid?

If saving £1K or more interests you, and you don't need to change urgently, try to sell privately. Then you will have some leverage to haggle the price on the car you want. Otherwise you and the dealer are trying to sell to each other, which is clearly a poor position.

They may relax a bit towards month-end if they have quotas to meet, and I suppose spring may be round the corner, but generally a franchised dealer will only sell on a 6-y-o car in the trade.

I have put my Plates on retentsion, So I will have to buy some new plates and i will try and sell the car for £3500 which i believe is a realistic price for the car since if it was on the forecourt, It would be £4500.

I will leave buying a car for the next 2 months and i will see what Renault Retail are doing regarding Pre Reg Cars.

I understand that i should look at other makes and models, but with driving renaults since 1989 and never letting me down, I dont want to tempt fate by going to another manufature.

Hi

I had the 3dr Megane Coupe on a 59 plate. I can tell you the Renault dealers do not incentivise themselves toward part-exchange (despite as you point out they could easily make an additional £1000 and get you a decent p/x price of £3k).

Some things you should note about the (now old!) Megane Coupe - infotainment integration is good for a 2009 car but awful compared to modern solutions. It's comfortable but extremely noisy on motorways thanks to tyre roar as you're comparatively low compared to the previous model. I did love it but I only used it around town, and I would assume as you're on the 1.5 dci you'll be doing more miles. Boot is great size, rear seats are not. Parts are significantly more expensive than we've paid for our V40 or A3 - all through dealers, which surprised us.

If you're looking to spend £11-12k I'd seriously consider a pre-facelift Focus TDCi or if coupe-looks are the be-all-and-end-all I'd look at the Pro'ceed or GTC Astra - you might even be able to find an early Volvo V40 D2 at that price as the fleets release them at 3 years old and we love ours. Brand loyalty is great but you really can end up missing out on the best deals...

I understand that i should look at other makes and models, but with driving renaults since 1989 and never letting me down, I dont want to tempt fate by going to another manufature.

I have owned Peugeots since about that time, with a Punto and a Clio for variety, but I don't stick with them in case I tempt fate. It used to be a sign of old age to be hooked on one maker for no logical reason - I just don't change as I have had no cause to, and I liked the design ethic of Pugs in the 80s and 90s.

Illogicality comes in when one gets a lemon, and then announces that one will never own a French car again (or German, or Japanese ....). Lemons come in many flavours, luckily not very often.

Apart from anyhing else, the guy is obviously an idiot. He'd seen photos of the car and still claimed he had made a mistake with the model shape?!

Sell your car privately and then you are in the driving seat -

March 1st is 10 days away and there will be loads of pre reg cars available - some 2014 models, some old models, some new models with 10 miles on the clock.

My first new car in 1966 was an old model. my last new car was an old model with 10 miles on the clock. Trailing edge technology can be good for you & your pocket.

Product issues should have been fixed in the first 2 years, outgoing models some times have "extra kit" an to top it off the dealer will be buying the car for a less and although some will hold a price some won't and then there are the Brokers!!!
