BMW 3 Series - TomTom any better than BMW SatNav? - robsterm

I have a built in satnav in my 2008 bmw 3 series but it always takes me somewhere about 3 miles from my final destination!

Is it worth getting a tomtom, will I have the same problems? Or is there a way to fix my bmw satnav?

thanks

I think even the most basic Tomtoms and Garmins have the full 7-digit postcode facility. It always amazed me that people used to pay over £1,000 for a built-in satnav which had only 5 digits. I think they all do 7 digits now but is yours one that doesn't? If so, yes, a cheap Tomtom or Garmin is worth it.

yep, i always wondered why it would let me put the last 2 digits in!! hmmm, got a bit ripped of there then!

I thought TomToms were most expensive than this, but just ordered this one from pc world for £90 and its got europe maps on there too not that i ever go to europe but may do one day! and its got speed camera alerts too! :-)

well it was actually a bit less than £90 as i got 5% off using a code from here.

Happy days! I might actually start arriving on time soon! :-)

Little bit annoyed the garage didnt tell me about the 5 digit thing though to be honest, one of the main reasons I bought that one because it had the sat nav!!!

The old BMW satnavs work on a 4 or 5 digit postcode system, which is how most of europe works. With us having detailed 7 digit postcodes, they really aren't much use.

Tomtoms do work with full detail UK postcodes, so are fine

And so do Garmins!

I wouldn't buy a standalone satnav any more.

Just use a maps app on a phone. I use google maps, but there are plenty of others out there. Phones are pretty cheap nowadays.

If you're worried about coverage, look for an app which allows the maps to be downloaded to the phone.

If you're worried about data charges look at the Three 1-2-3 plan.

I have a fitted TomTom in my Mazda CX-5, to be honest its ok but that's all.

Both Xtrails i had with satnav were much better IMO, even though they didn't have post codes on my models, 2004, 2009.

I also have a Garmin that is ok but that all.

Since using the built in satnav with post codes i have found myself as much as a mile away from my destination, but only in rural areas, post codes cover a large area out of town, something to consider. A street number is essential.

The only accurate way i've found for rural areas is to use X,Y coordinates, these get you exactly to the place you want.

If its somewhere we havent been before using google maps and finnishing with street view works for me.

Just put in the actual street name in the required town/city if it can't take the full post code

And so do Garmins

Got a Garmin, had it about 5 years now. It takes full 7 digit post codes and has always taken me direct to the address. If you are out in the sticks where post codes are next to useless it takes lat/long input.

Brilliant for under £100.
