Renault Kangoo 1.9D 2001 - Very rough running - Injectors? EGR Valve? Help!!! - stuartl

When I bought this vehicle back last summer it would often run rough on idle as if it was 'misfiring' or was a petrol engine with a plug lead removed. I have lived with the problem but its got a lot worse recently and in 'kangarooing' even when driving normally which it has never done before. When idling the engine will act as if I am blipping the throttle, run rough and smoke then after a minute or so clear itself before then happening again 10-20 seconds later.

Does this sound like injector faults? A local diesel specialist say he can test them on a bench for a couple of quid each and they just unscrew. Firstly does my amateur diagnosis sound correct and secondly is removing the injectors as easy as this chap suggested?

Many thanks in anticipation of any help you can offer

If its misfiring when cold that's usually due to low compression either through engine wear or valve leakage. It could possibly be injector trouble but I think the only way you will find out is by having them, tested. If its not that then have a compression test.

If this is an IDI engine then the injectors are usually not to difficult tot remove.

I would check you havn't any air bubbles in the fuel.

Put a piece of clear tubing in the fuel line immediately before the injection pump & look for any small air bubbles.

There's a big difference between an engine misfire and rough running. If you had low compression the first thing you may notice is it becoming more difficult to start from cold. Rough running could be due to air in the fuel system prior to the injection pump. Air cannot get into the secondary fuel system. Or the engine may be drawing back some of its exhaust gasses rather than clean air through the air intake. A stuck open EGR valve would cause this. Make sure the air filter is clean too. Check all of this before you remove the injectors.

Thanks for the reply Peter, I have just seen it.

I saw on another forum last night the suggestion of disconnecting the plug to the warm air sensor which is just above the EGR valve.

I did this at lunchtime and the car drove home faultlessly!

Does this mean the sensor (or possibly the wiring to it) is faulty and it do any harm running the vehicle with it disconnected?
