Mk2s famous for letting water in as you raise hatch, due to design. They added a plastic strip on the outside of glass on Mk2.5 to help stop this.
But if it is a considerable amount make sure any build up of dirt and debris is removed from the water channel at the top of the hatch around the hinges. If that's ok do the same down the left channel and around the n/s light cluster.
If that doesn't cure it, it maybe the rubber seal that's at fault.

Also make sure the rear lamps are properly fitted and sealed against the body. It's not unusual for water to get between the joint.

As above--check the screws which hold the rear light clusters in place first of all. The other common leak point is the recess in the bodywork where the tailgate hinges bolt into, at the top of the hatch opening, one either side. There's an assembly fault which leaves a hairline gap between the seams, not really visible but water gets in there and tracks down into the boot. Smear generously with silicone sealant all around this recess to fix it, after cleaning out the gunge. This fault caused my boot to fill with water and took me ages to find.
