Peugeot 106 - Peugeot 106 1.4 (1997) - Front RHS brake binding - mbounds86

Hi all,

After a recent driveshaft/wheel bearing change on my R-Reg 1.4XR, I found that the OS brake is now binding. I have checked/replaced several parts and found that the caliper piston is causing the inner brake pad to act on the disc; it's not fully binded, but drags on the disc and causes a loud noise when driving. The piston moves out but appears to fail to retract properly.

So far I have done the following:

  • Replaced caliper
  • Replaced flexi-hose
  • Slackened brake pedal to servo linkage
  • Bled system
  • Checked pads and caliper are sliding ok
  • Checked servo and working ok
  • Opened bleed valve to see if master cylinder problem - fluid drips but is not forced out, so I presume master cylinder is ok.

Not really sure what else could be the problem, unless the master cylinder is misadjusted? Has anybody else had this problem before, or has any ideas about what it could be? Personally I'm stumped!

You have already done everything that I would do and more probably, if there is no residual pressure and the piston moves easily either it isn't moving back far enough or the pads are to thick. Assuming this is a sliding caliper it it sliding OK?

Hi Peter,

Yes the caliper is the Bendix sliding type. The brake pads are the same as I had before the wheel bearing and driveshaft were changed so this can't be the problem.

The piston can be pushed back easily enough with the pads out, but doesn't retract sufficiently when the pads are in and the system is being operated by the pedal.

The funny thing is there wasn't a problem before, so I'm really confused as to what has brought this on. The old wheel bearing was absolutely knackered, so perhaps the dimensions have been altered?

I could only assume that the new wheel bearing is either the wrong width or it is not correctly located in the steering carrier.

try measuring from the inner friction surface of the disk to the machined side of the caliper mounting lugs on both sides of car.

I'm going to guess it will be a good few mm less on the problem side of the car.

Mr Danno's theory sounds like a goer, or the caliper bearer assembly has been bent/disturbed leading to the pads being applied at a slight angle and ''locking'' (does it do the same in reverse?), or the caliper itself isn't quite right.

Making accurate measurements and comparing between the two sides sounds like a very good plan.

Another check could be to remove the new (used?) driveshaft and see if the brake still sticks...presumably you don't have to drive the car to test this.

When you say the caliper is sliding OK, have you actually removed the caliper and cleaned all sliding surfaces up with wire brush/emery/wire wool and lubed, and checked again....and is the pad a loose enough fit to slide in its track to relieve brake pressure?

Hi guys,

Many thanks for the advice - unfortunately the car's stuck at my parents' place at the moment and I've returned to work, so opportunities to work on it are limited. I'll have a go at taking some measurements soon and update.

Kind regards,

Martin
