Do people drive in the same way they walk? - galileo

When I walk through the town centre I notice that some pedestrians tend to stop suddenly in the middle of the pavement, others will walk two or three abreast on narrow pavements, some will step blindly into the road or out of shops while gossiping on mobile phones. Then there are those who trundle along at 1mph in the centre of the path, holding a conversation with their friend, oblivious to anyone trying to pass.

There are those who are aware of people around them and make progress with due consideration. Does it seem likely that habits on foot may well be carried over to the way people drive?

I'm sure you're right. There's far too much unnecessary braking and stopping by car drivers as much as by pedestrians - and it can cause accidents.

Galileo are you related to my SWMBO?

Its supermarket trolley drivers who annoy her the most, especially those who manage to park their trolley blocking the isle off while they take ages to check out the same product they must buy every week,...often hear her mutter ''now put it behind a steering wheel''.

My pet hate is when trying to go to the loo in a motorway service area, you follow them in at snail pace then they stop just inside the door and peer around taking in the wondrous splendour of it all, it's like trying to get past a gasometer...and don't get me started on those glued to their toy phones, Dear Lord, wandering round aimlessly glued to it and they even stand at the urinal peering into the thing.

I spent many years expediting components to keep engine production lines running; going from one end of the factory to another, always against deadlines, one develops a habit of speedy walking.

Though retired for some years, its hard to slow down to dawdler's pace, but if out with SWMBO, I do make the effort so as not to leave her breathless!

(Visiting suppliers to hurry up deliveries also conditioned me to 'make progress' when out on the road)

Ever noticed how the widest people stop in the narrowest spaces?

They often walk two or more abreast!

Dear Lord, wandering round aimlessly glued to it and they even stand at the urinal peering into the thing.

Dear me, for a moment I thought that was a typo ....

Nice one Andrew T, I was wondering about a comment myself. Well done.

People do seem to lack a certain spacial awareness no matter whether driving, walking cycling. Sometimes it has a lot to do with personal sound systems welded to their ears!!! The only difference is, when walking they do not mind being overtaken and will sometimes hold doors open etc in a generally nice way. However try the same manouvres when driving and people go balistic.

Very strange.
