Vauxhall Corsa D '09 Life 1.0 L - Power steering and ABS failure - pianoman1

Hi,

I need some help with my corsa. It is '09 1.0 litre life.

For the last couple of months i have been having problems with power steering. At first, I would just get the power steering and ABS light come on during engine start up. All it took was to restart the engine and the faults would clear. (whilst the faults were there, i would have no physical power steering available).

Now pretty much every morning i have to leave the car running for 20-30 mins, and then restart the engine to clear the faults. Once the faults clear, power steering is fine.

It seems like the colder the weather, the longer i have to run the engine before the faults clear.

Is this a common fault of any sort? Vauxhall have reset the ECU, courtesy of £60, which is the same that my local garage did (who said i should go to vauxhall). The reset didnt do anything. They are saying they will need 1-2 days to look at it at maximum of £250 labour just for inspection.

I really don't know much about cars, let alone how to diagnose/fix them. I'm just curious if someone can give me advise, because they dealer is being vague and not giving me much info.

Also, my car has done 74000 miles. In the last 2 years, admittedly, I only had basic services done on the car. Would they likely pick up the fault by doing a full service, so that i dont get charged all the labour just to diagnose this problem?

Many thanks for reading and appreciate any advise.

I would check for any water ingress into the abs control module that is located to the rear of the engine bay, under the bulkhead.Any water here can cause various electrical systems to malfunction.

thank you for this advice. is this something I can check as a complete novice, or should I leave it to the mechanic? I now have the choice of going to the dealer or to a private mechanic who specialises in electrics. Any advice which i should go for?

A service, whether full or 'light', will not identify the problem. All they will do is say (or put on paper), that you have a problem, and you'll need to get it investigated.

I'd tend to go to the private mechanic, rather than a main dealer. Main dealers just employ fitters, so their first step will be to say "power steering/ABS fault. Fit new steering rack, new steering pump, new ABS unit". Ker-ching for them.

Hi. i've been told by vauxhall that my power steering control module is faulty and the whole unit needs replacing. The costs are way beyond what i can afford, so trying to get a second hand part. They gave me the part number 95514393, but this just brings up lots of german websites, one if which has a steering column. The spare parts companies are looking for more specific info.

I was asking these people about parts (http://www.acspowersteering.co.uk/) and she told me that the vauxhall number isnt the right one and im to look in the footwell above the pedals and that i wouldnt need to remove the panel. I found that number, but it seems like it is just for the steering column lower joint (13248190).

Any ideas what i should be looking for? I'm going to have the garage fit it, but i really need to get the part 2nd hand to save the cash. Appreciate the help.
