2014 Golf GT Mark 7 Petrol and 2009 Fiat 500 Diesel - Battery when left for 5 weeks - skinnywhippet

Hello, we're probably going to have to leave both cars unused for about 5 weeks, and I'm after some advice about the batteries.

Firstly, for that length of time is trickle charging really necessary or advised?

Secondly, a solar panel in the car would be the most convenient solution compared to leaving plugged in to the mains, but I'm confused by the different sizes available and charging points (12v socket, direct to battery or via the diganostic port).

Is there a definitive recommendation on the most appropriate solution? I wouldn't want to take any risks with the cars' electronics by plugging-in the wrong solar panel to the wrong place.

Thank you very much in advance for any replies.

I suspect you may be surpised and find there no need. Ive had cars off the road for a month and they start first time. Unless the battery are true sealed for life one, ensure they are fully topped up. A good long run when you get back or charge over night you should be fine.

If you do go down the charge route, only get a charge that attaches direct to the battery and ensure the battery is well vented.

12V sockets in both my last two cars have been isolated until the key is turned. Not much chance of charging the battery through them!

Thanks for the replies - I might just leave them and see what happens - and if they're flat think again the next time.

I would be inclined just to disconnect the battery, its unlikely to lose much capacity in that time if its in good condition.
