BMW 320 Diesel - Automatic transmission fluid change in 320? - tix
Just wondering if the automatic transmission oil should be changed occasionally in this car or is it really a 'lifetime job'. There is no mention of it in the service booklet. The car is a 2006 with 200,000Klms.

The general advice from ZF is that the oil should be changed every 50 - 80,000 miles, depending on how hard the transmission is stressed or every eight years.

Agreed. This 'filled for life' advice is now recognised as not being oner of BMW's finest hours.

Technically, it's do-able as a DIY job at home, for the more capable. Ideally though, get it done at a garage, preferably a transmission specialist or a BMW-independent specialist.

It was a common statement made by many of car manufacturers. ZF oil changes would have added £500 to the dealers service prices. Sadly good service practice lost out to lower running costs figures for fleet buyers sheadsheets.
