Any - Small Automatic 4x4 - RaineMan

Due to a number of changes in my life I need a different daily driver. Basically it has to be a relatively small automatic 4x4 as much of my mileage is now along narrow and poorly maintained roads prone to flooding. A gammy leg means it has to be auto. My budget is limited to £2-3k. Any thoughts?

Suzuki Jimny.

Yes, seriously.

Subaru Forester.

or Mitsubishi Outlander 1, but for goodness sake make sure it's got LPG fitted and working properly always assuming you have LPG supplies locally, 2.4 4 cyl petrol engine and they have a serious drink problem, also note many were fitted new by the importer with LPG but the Pharoah system supplier is now no more so an aftermarket system is a better bet, buy cheap if this is an option its an unpopular but underrated car....if the headlight outside lenses are cracking up walk away, they're £250 a side.

If smaller engine required Daihatsu Terios would be my choice.

2nd hand 4 x 4's can be a money pit

old 4 x 4's can be a money pit

old automatics can be a money pit

So an old 2nd hand automatic 4 x 4 is likely to be money pit thta will let you down when you least expect it. With a gammy leg do you want to risk being stranded. And since you appear to have a limited budget do you want to risk large bills.

Suggest you perhaps have a long think.

With your budget you should get a late Honda HRV. A Honda should be less of a gamble than some at this age, but it might still be worth only spending 2/3rds of your budget on the car and keeping the rest for a repair or 2 if needed

Before spending on anything try and find the wading depth for what you're considering, if thats not available (it should be for what you want) have a look under the bonnet and see where the air intake is and make your own judgement.

Another vote for the Toyota RAV-4. Suzukis should also be OK but there are probably more Toyotas to choose from, especially as you need an automatic.

Whilst all of the posts are helpful and positive, I think skidpan's advice for caution needs careful consideration.

If you do get one I'd also be Toyota RAV - know a single older lady with mobility problems who is very happy with hers.

Do you really need a 4x4? Unless these poorly maintained roads are often deep in mud or have very steep, poor traction inclines, or are knee deep in snow every winter, then you probably dont need a 4x4. I would look at one of the 2WD variants of the smaller light off roaders, you'll still get higher ride height, and the more forgiving ride of the light off roader suspension, and one less thing to go wrong. A set of all season tyres and you'll be able to go anywhere a 4wd can go in all but the most appalling conditions on road.
