Jeep have rendered Cherokee 2002 to c2007 and some grand cherokees unfit for towing.

They issued a recall to inspect the distance between tow bar and tank. As far as our local dealer is aware all tow bars fitted in the UK will fail. You are then able to sign a disclaimer which probably invaliates your insurance or you can opt to have the 'safe' crossmember fitted. The cross member looks like a tow bar frame but will not accept a tow hitch. In the USA the same bar accommodates a tow hitch, but this is not type approved for UK use. Jeep cannot supply a towbar that meets the spec in the UK. So for the c10,000 affected vehicles, you cannot longer tow in the UK. Given that the majority will have been bought for towing this is very poor on Jeeps part.

It is also not clear,that should a bar become available how we will know it is 'safe'
