EVs - are any rated for towing? - RT

Came across a brilliant idea on a US forum to overcome the issue of range for EVs when you need to do a long journey.

Using a powertrain/suspension from a FWD car with conventional engine, they build a trailer which acts as a "pusher" to give extended range but only on the occasions you need it.

The main issue in Europe is that most EVs (? all ?) have a zero towing limit so can't use any form of trailer - we also have stricter trailer regulations than the US.

It might be a solution, though.

II've seen a old milk float towing a trailer before if that helps.

I meant pure EV, not hybrid.

Can't see any problems with this at all. Let us know how you get on.

Probably easier to hitch onto a passing BMW, with a magnetic grapnel. They'd never notice.

A smaller trailer with extra batteries would be good, especially if you could rent them and exchange for another one that is fully charged.

okay then - how about towing a generator like one often used to see behind a van or truck years ago?

Given the weight of batteries for their output, that's probably the most efficient method. You could power it by a liquid with very high combusability. Say petrol.

Be easier to just buy a petrol car lol

But you couldn't use that as an electric city car - the suggestion is aimed at getting the best of both worlds.
